Referral to fetal medicine after finding low lying placenta at 20 week scan

I had my scan today at 21 weeks and the sonographer told me that the placenta is over the cervix, I can't recall if she said fully or partially. I have been referred to the fetal medicine unit.
She did say that as the pregnancy progresses it can move away and up.
Feeling anxious now.

@Straightomyhead I'll definitely look up those videos as it would be interesting.
The sonographer did say that it can move up as the pregnancy progresses.

@Nollybolly6 Did you? I can't recall if they said my placenta is partially covering or completely covering. I'm definitely going to ring tomorrow about anything that I should or shouldn't be doing as the sonographer didn't say anything. I'd like to know before I have my appointment.

My sonographer didn’t want to comment on much. I’ve just looked on NHS website and will ask at my next midwife appt. NHS says 9/10 women’s will move to a higher location so it’s unlikely to still continue to be a problem for most women

I had this picked up at 22 weeks when I had my 20 week scan. I was monitored with scans and consultation appointments and had a c section at 38 weeks. Mine was completely covering the birth canal but I had no issues with it. You will be ok.

Rainbowsunshine81 · 06/01/2025 22:23

@Nollybolly6 I read if you have a posterior placenta less likely to move up, the sonographer said its all about where it implants and this is a ivf pregnancy which I think she said could have something to do with it.

@teaandtoastwithmarmite I've been told ill be having growth scans with this pregnancy.
How often did you have scans and consultant appointments. I wish I could remember if mine is completely covering or partially. I think something got said they'd like it to be 2cm away?

It was 12 years ago so I’m not fully sure about the consultant appointments but they were fairly regular and I had regular appointments with the midwife to check her heartbeat. I had scans at 32 and 36 weeks and I think one just before. The consultant was really good and drew me diagrams and all sorts. I remember being quite calm about it although I did suffer with horrendous anxiety through my pregnancy but that’s another story.

@teaandtoastwithmarmite thats good to know that the appointments are regular.
Trying to be calm, but I can get anxious at times.

@NewishMe I'm going to ring the fetal medicine unit today and ask for more information about what to do and not to do whilst I'm waiting for the appointment.

@NewishMe I had a c section with my son as he was breech, I was asked if I've had any problems with the scar, but none that I can think of.

@Rainbowsunshine81 mine was ivf too, placenta at the back. My midwife did mention that there’s a higher likelihood of placenta praevia with ivf. Not sure why exactly but it’s obviously something they know about.

Rainbowsunshine81 · 07/01/2025 13:06

@Keepsmiling2948 It's strange isn't it? I'm going to ask about that when I have the appointment.

I definitely have placenta previa, the placenta is completely covering the cervix. I have an argument on the 14th of Feb at the fetal medicine unit.

I was on bed rest in hospital in the room closest to the theatre for the last week but I didn’t have to give blood, they had it ready for me and for the baby if needed (6 years ago)

champagneplanet · 07/01/2025 20:59

I had placenta previa with DC2, first birth was a vaginal breech delivery!

Found out at 20 week scan and was told that it was fully covering and if it didn't move I would have no option but to have a c-section which terrified me.

I was scanned a few times and booked in for an elective section but went into labour early so ended up having an emergency. Alll was fine with both baby and me and I didn't have to rest prior (I went into labour 2 days after finishing for mat leave!) or give blood or anything. The c-section was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be either.

Good luck.

Rainbowsunshine81 · 07/01/2025 21:49

@champagneplanet I rang the fetal medicine unit today just to ask about anything I should or shouldn't be doing, the placenta is completely covering the cervix. I have my appointment on the 14th of February. I did have a c section with my son eight years ago as he was breech. I'm wondering if when I go for this appointment I'll be scanned then or will it not be until 32 weeks, then I've read another scan at 36 weeks. I also know I'm going to be having growth scans which is unrelated to the placenta. I'm happy to go with whatever is going to be the safest option.
Thank you ❤️

@Narkacist I'm hoping from this appointment I'll have a clearer picture, have already wrote down some questions that I want to ask.
