Hello! I’m nearly 4 weeks and I already have a horrendous nausea feeling. I can’t finish my tea. I’m starving but feel so sick. Does anybody have any tips? Trying to eat as much as I can because I want baby to be ok! I seem to be okay in the morning/ lunch but nighttime can’t stomach much at all!

thank you

It's called morning sickness but I've never had it in the morning in two pregnancies - it's always been afternoon/ evening/ during the night for me.

It's brutal, it really is.

The most important thing is to try and make sure you don't get dehydrated. Even if you can't eat much, try and take regular tiny sips of fluid and keep them down. Food wise, don't worry too much about nutrition at this stage, just eat what you can - for me it was a small handful of salt and vinegar crisps, salted crackers or occasionally a little bit of melon. Little and often always seemed to work best for me.

Plain and easy to digest things are good - crackers, bread etc.

Also ginger ale helped me a lot - not very common in the UK but you can get it in supermarkets (don’t get the diet kind it’s gross).

I had hyperemesis gravidarum and the midwife told me to try and eat/sip water little and often.

Baby will be fine. I was worried to having not been able to keep anything down for days and the midwife says the baby helps itself first and you have stores. If it gets to over a day then let your midwife know.

Take care. It isn’t forever and hopefully only until 12 weeks.

I’m 8 weeks and my nausea started around 5/6 weeks. It’s still quite bad but I’ve learnt not to feel too guilty about what I eat and how often I eat.

I’m currently living off of crackers, ginger biscuits and the odd bit of plain pasta or jacket potato, oh and tons of Gaviscon! Had a scan at 7 weeks 4 days and the baby is growing just fine with a very strong heart beat. As long as you are taking folic acid and vitamin D I think our job is just to survive at the moment! You’re doing great 😀x

You don't need to eat any more than normal at this stage. Eat little and often to help with the nausea. If I was too hungry or too full I felt worse. I was constantly nibbling on banana or plain crisps 😂

CandyCane457 · 05/01/2025 19:57

I’m 8 and a half weeks and my morning (aka all day!) sickened started last Monday, at 7 and a half. I haven’t stopped throwing up for a week now and can barely eat. I have a couple of ginger biscuits and lucozade in the day, and some nights I’ve managed a couple of mouthfuls of whatever my boyfriend has cooked (chicken stir fry, pasta bake) but I’m talking no more than a small palm-sized amount. Boyfriend went to the pharmacy for me the other day and they said there’s not much I can do other than drink water and not worry if I’m not eating much.
Got my first midwife apt on Wednesday so hoping she can help. Also supposedly back at work tomorrow (primary teacher) and I’m absolutely dreading it as I don’t know how I’ll get through the day!

It’s a good point others have mentioned. Dehydration is the concern. Not eating you’ll be okay - your body has stores.

Try not to worry too much about the baby, at this early stage they get all of their nutrition from the yolk sac so they're all good!

Morning sickness is grim but it hopefully won't last too long. In the meantime try plain crackers, toast or ready salted crisps and see if they agree with you.

And I found sucking a boiled sweet or a mint or something made the nausea so much better. I used to carry boiled sweets with me wherever I went and they stopped me from puking so often in those first few months.

Hope you feel better soon and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I'm 7 weeks gone, the nausea didn't hit me badly until last week and it's been awful every day. I feel a bit normal today but I'm not gonna let it trick me - a few days ago I felt alright too, actually I was really hungry and craving a pizza so I ordered one. Managed a few slices, but the next morning I was the worst I'd ever been and vomited for the first time. Whether this was because I indulged or not, I don't know, but I'm scared of eating too much now.
Little and often seems to be best. Cereal seems to be my main meal most days, but I'll snack on crackers and ice lollies and the odd packet of crisps also help. It'd take me about 5 minutes to eat a single cracker sometimes, but if I'm too hungry I'm more nauseous. It's definitely tough these first weeks it seems!

Marvellousmango · 05/01/2025 23:37

@CandyCane457 I'm a teacher also. I got signed off sick for about 6 weeks in the first trimester. Don't force yourself to go in like we usually do, put yourself first and take as much time as you need.

Goldpanther · 06/01/2025 06:01

I had bad morning sickness, and the same inability to eat a meal.

I found eating pineapple, pears and fizzy sweets (like strawberry laces) tolerable and helped ease my nausea, I couldn't imagine anything worse than crackers or dry bread!

For meals, I did try to cook food that could be eaten cold afterwards like pasta, but I eventually went off most foods until about 18 weeks when my appetite and taste buds returned to more normal. Currently in my third trimester and although I eat my normal diet now, I still can't finish a meal so rely on having more regular snacks, morning, afternoon and evening.

Thank you- I really needed to hear this! Just getting myself ready to drag myself for an INSET and going to speak to the head as soon as I can about everything. There’s been a couple of women at work who have had babies in the last couple of years at my school, but neither suffered with morning sickness like this, so I feel a bit “alone” with it like I’m the only one causing problems! Even though it shouldn’t be like that should it! Thanks so much for letting me know you were in a similar situation and you got signed off 😊

PregnantAtLast · 06/01/2025 11:18

I get it a lot worse in the afternoons/ evenings as well. I'm also hungrier in the mornings. I tend to front-load, I eat more (still small portions) in the morning/ lunchtime, and then I will sometimes just skip dinner.

Others are right that you don't need more calories in the first trimester, and it's even OK to eat a bit less than usual if you feel too sick. You'll probably make up for it further down the line!

esunny · 06/01/2025 11:45

Wow! Thank you all so much for your replies. It’s so reassuring that I’m not alone. I hate being sick! Could I ask what folic acid and vitamin D you all took please? Read different things everywhere! Xx

I’m just over 6 weeks and have been feeling rough for the past few weeks. It feels like a bad hangover which you never get relief from.
I have a few hours in the evening I feel ok and then by 9pm I need to sleep.
im sleeping 9+ hours
have no clue how ill function when I go back to work next week x

Olivepearl · 06/01/2025 15:14

Ginger with lemon and honey has really helped me with my nausea.

Jaysworld · 08/01/2025 23:21

I’m currently 7 weeks and have had 24/7 nausea since 5.5 weeks, I’ve been trying to eat little and often and have started taking vitamin b6 since last week which has stopped the vomiting (20mg x 2 a day), the GP prescribed me cyclizine but it made me throw up more so stopped taking that, the things I can stomach are canned pineapples, cold grapes and raspberries, half a jacket potato with cheese, fizzy sweets and full fat cola, I did have cordial but after throwing that up I’ve been put off, the foods keep changing for me but I’ve noted it’s mainly the cold things that are helping
I also keep some go ahead biscuits near my bedside and as soon as i wake up ill force myself to have one which I think helps

fingers crossed it settles down for us soon 🥰

Hello, I’m just over 12 weeks and continue to struggle with morning sickness (since between 5 - 6 weeks) except it’s more evenings than mornings. It’s got to the point where I know the exact times it starts and ends. Echoing what others have said, trying to eat little and often, I notice I feel much more nauseous when it’s approaching 2 hours since I last ate. I went off hot drinks and water pretty early so I’ve been trying to sip water throughout the day but have found one of the most tolerable drinks is orange Capri-suns (the ones with sugar). I also try to have a couple of ice lollies during the day as another way to get fluids. As evenings are bad for me, I usually have a couple of cream crackers around 10pm and then a small amount of milk to swallow my vitamins as it became difficult to take these with water. I also switched to an unflavoured and non-foaming toothpaste as I started to retch when brushing my teeth. I’ve also found sucking boiled mints helps with the stronger waves of nausea. Hang in there.

Has anyone considered taking Ondansetron? It really is a miracle drug for morning sickness/HG. 💐
