First trimester and blood thinners - I feel like my body is giving up on me!

I’m currently in my first trimester (8 weeks) and have terrible nausea and extremely low energy. I have to take blood thinning injections daily due to having a blood clot a number of years ago, but my god do they make me feel miserable! Any energy I do get is depleted within 5 minutes of deciding to do a task.

If I get enough energy to shower and wash my hair I can guarantee I will need to sit on the shower floor half way through and when I’m out I will require a lay down to catch my breathe and get some more energy just to finish my tasks.

My partner is great and is doing so much for me but I am just full of guilt - I’m so happy to be pregnant but I’m also resenting how I am feeling because I’m only
pregnant, not ill so why am I unable to do so much?!

Some nights my body feels like it’s shutting down and I struggle to see how I can do this every single day for the rest of the pregnancy. Has anyone else had this experience with pregnancy / blood thinners - I’m desperate for advice / tips please!

@Rubymachine I am on blood thinning injections but they do not make me feel like that. They hurt and sting a bit. When do you take them? Have you had your iron checked? And are you taking anything for the nausea?. The first trimester takes the energy from you anyway and especially if your feeling sick. X

I doubt if it is the medication making you feel ill. It is much more likely to be pregnancy related nausea, fatigue and anaemia. What is your iron level? Have you had your bloods done recently?

How strange! I remember a similar feeling when I was on blood thinners not pregnant, that’s why they took me off of them as I used to have the same effects ref the shower and low energy! But as this is my first pregnancy I’m struggling to distinguish what’s normal for the first trimester.

Haven’t had my bloods checked yet - due to go to the doctors this week, I tend to do the injections just before bedtime. No nothing for nausea - I’m unsure what I can take. I feel completely clueless 😥

Thanks for commenting! I’m due to the doctors this week so hoping they will check my blood levels! First pregnancy so struggling to work out what are normal first trimester feelings and not 😣

@Rubymachine this is the 2nd time I have had them and never reacted like that. They just sting when I take them I also take it at night!
Definitely ask for bloods done especially iron. Midwife usually takes bloods at booking appointment anyway. My iron came back fine however when they looked properly my ferritin level was low.
Ask the doctor for some medication for nausea. I was the same totally flawed me in the first trimester. Had to be signed of work as I couldn't function struggled to eat and drink etc. Alot of times they give cyclizine first but it didnt do anything for me so if it doesnt work dont be aftaod to go back and ask for something else. I think feeling nauseous is just as bad as morning sickness it got that bad for me I was wishing to be sick to get some relief! I know it's hard now but hang on in there get as much help as you can it will get better! X

Thank you so much! I will 100% speak to the doctor this week and I have my first midwife appointment the week after so will speak to the about the options. Luckily I’m able to work from home as and when so it hasn’t been too bad for me, but I think I’d be in the same boat if I was in the office full time!

I didn’t expect pregnancy to be this tough so early on - it’s completely thrown me 😅

thanks for your advice! X

I've been injecting blood thinners since 6 weeks and aspirin since 12 and haven't felt any reaction in response.

I did feel horrendous (extreme nausea, exhaustion etc) until 15 weeks but there didn't seem to be a correlation. Was given 2 types anti sickness tablets which didn't seem to make a difference but was worth a try.

Might be worth asking the consultant or GP if there's a different type?

Hope you feel better soon, it's so rough.

Hey, I've been on them since 4.5 weeks. I've had side effects of spotting - has anyone has this. It's happened twice and is so scary. I am 10 weeks now. I have found if I put ice on the area I'm injecting on my stomach 5 mins before having the injection it doesn't sting or hurt and I've noticed less bruising.
