Colposcopy for ectropian

Hi all,

just looked for some advice/reassurance. I am 22 weeks pregnant and had a big bleed, got it checked and they have noticed an ectropian on my cervix and are confident that’s where the bleed is coming from, cervix is closed and they say it’s not coming from the pregnancy. However they are referring me for a colposcopy to take a closer look, I immediately go into panic mode thinking they’re looking for the worst!

The Dr and midwife both reassured me it looks fine and just like an ectropian, which is very common due to pregnancy hormones. I just can’t help worrying.

Has this happened to anybody else please? Currently waiting for the appointment and can’t help overthinking it all!

Thank you

Hi, I recently had some bleeding outside of periods (not in pregnancy), went to the GP and they've said it looked like a large ectropian, but sent me by 2ww to the colposcopy clinic to be safe. I panicked too, thinking the worst as you do. The consultant took one look and said yep, that's an ectropian, nothing to worry about and no further action needed. Try not to worry :)

Hi,

I have had an ectropian before, not whilst pregnant but about a year afterwards. The doctor was pretty sure that is what is was but I was still seen on the 2 week pathway and sent info about cervical abnormalities. It was very scary at the time but was reassured that I needed a colposcopy to treat it anyway. Was seen in 10 days, confirmed ectropian and had it treated there and then.
Hope this helps a bit,

@Tryingandhoping2020 @bbn81 thank you both so much, always reassuring to hear other people’s story, more so for the positive outcomes of yours! :)

Trying not to overthink it, just hope the appointment comes through soon and I don’t have to wait too long!

I also had an ectropian from hormonal changes that caused bleeding, was seen in clinic and told it's very normal, treated then and there :)

@TheEllisGreyMethod thank you so much, that’s good to hear!

An ectropian is basically where the tissue from inside the cervix (much more sensitive and vascular) grows on the outside of the cervix. It's just normal tissue but slightly in the wrong place. Completely harmless. The problem with pregnancy is that you have a huge amount of blood supplying the pelvic organs to support your pregnancy, therefore the cervix gets tons more blood. The extropian is prone to bleeding at the best of times, but add pregnancy to the mix and it really can be a lot of bleeding. Colposcopy allows them to have a close detailed look and potentially add silver nitrate or something to cauterise it. This scenario causes a lot of worry, understandably, but it all sounds like it will be fine! Good luck OP.

I had the same, cervical ectropian. Pregnancy hormones irritated it and caused bleeding. I was sent for a colposcopy and they treated it there and then, like others said. Tested a sample and it was all fine. I know it's hard (I was really worried too) but try not to panic.

@remaininghopeful23 @coastergirl thank you for your responses, it’s definitely helped put my mind at ease a little bit. I’m sure the worry won’t go until I’ve had the colposcopy but that’s definitely helped, honestly thank you so much!
