Why is my morning sickness so much worse this time?

With my first pregnancy I had quite a bit of nausea and occasionally actually threw up. This time round I'm throwing up 4 or 5 times a day and constantly running to the toilet to wretch! How can it be so different when I'm the same person. Not sure if this is a silly question but would appreciate anyone who's had a similar experience. The hormones are making me quite anxious and for some reason it's troubling me that my symptoms are worse this time. Thanks so much 💕xx

Is this your second pregnancy?

I'm 28 weeks now with DD2 (DD1 is 4.5). Symptoms started earlier this time and the sickness, nausea, tiredness etc has all been a lot worse this time.

Thought I was done with the sickness at 20 weeks but it's come back this week with a vengeance.

I’m pregnant third time and it’s worse each time. Also first was a boy and second and third girls which I think is worse (old wives tales)

How far along are you OP and have you had any scans as yet? Apparently twin pregnancies are worse, because its double the hormones. That could be a possibility!

I think in part we’re more exhausted 2nd/subsequent time around! You can’t rest in the same way. Each pregnancy is different remember! My nausea in my 3rd has been so much worse than my first 2, no twins (despite everyone thinking that explained it!) I was just absolutely knackered!

Pregnancy Sickness Support can help, they were very kind when I was struggling in my first pregnancy. If you’re being sick a lot and/or not able to keep food and fluids down medication might help.

Poor you - I remember last time having a random recurrence of sickness at about 23 weeks out of nowhere! This is my second - thanks for sharing, it's reassuring to know it's not just me that's worse second time round! I naively thought it might be better as my body would be used to it. 😂

Oh gosh, thanks for sharing, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one although I'm sorry you've been suffering! DH is desperate for a girl this time (first is DS) so I might not sharing the OWT - don't want to get his hopes up!

I had a private scan at 9 weeks (yesterday) and there's just the one in there for me too! Maybe you're right about the exhaustion of looking after other DC being a factor! With my first I tried to avoid bad smells but can't really do that with an 11 month old!

Thank you - I have my booking app on Monday so I'll mention it there and see if maybe some meds might be the answer. I'm a teacher and bad in work next week so slightly apprehensive about needing to run out of class to throw up every hour!

I actually had a private viability scan at 9 weeks yesterday and it was confirmed as singleton - the sonographer had an extra good look after I said my sickness had been really bad!

I had HG every time and was most severely ill the first time as it was not expected and it took longer to start treatment, and even longer to find one that helped at all etc.

Having said that, tiredness does make sickness worse, so that definitely could be impacting your symptoms. All pregnancies are different though too so it may just be one of those things with no real explanation.

Hope you soon start feeling better soon. Make a GP appointment to request some medication if you're feeling poorly. 4-5 times a day vomiting with more nausea on top is a lot, could easily be classed as HG, and there's plenty of anti sickness meds available to try. HG can lead to dehydration requiring hospital treatment if not treated early enough.

Sorry to say mine got worse each pregnancy. Wasn’t associated with sex of the baby either as I had two of each… but medication can be helpful as it can be very debilitating.

Three pregnancies, bad sickness in all 3 but in different ways. The first pregnancy bad Sickness but worst 10am-3pm so I was able to eat 2 meals a day and still managed to go into the office most days
Pregnancy 2 10am-10pm nausea threw up nearly everything I ate but managed fluids fine. Worked at home and had 2-3 days off sick a week
Pregnancy 3 able to eat ok but couldn't cope with any fluids and threw up whenever I did anything physically exerting barely moved from the sofa and had 3 weeks signed off sick.

Pregnancy 1 gave me my daughter but 2 and 3 were miscarriages.

I had the same, first pregnancy nauseous all the time but not actually throwing up. Really severe food aversions. Second time round secere food aversions nausea and throwing up loads. I lost loads of weight in my second pregnancy. Both my girls are healthy and happy! 😃 I know it's grim right now but it sounds normal to me, if you are concerned about how much you are keeping down/dehydration I'd speak to your midwife or doctor. Congratulations!

Mine was bad in both pregnancies but worse in the second - it’s one of the reasons we stopped at 2! I was sick multiple times a day from 3.5 weeks (vomiting was what made me test as we weren’t really trying) until he was born. Baby was a different sex but boy second time round after a girl first time.

YouveGotAFastCar · 04/01/2025 18:20

I didn’t get any symptoms at all with my first, a boy. This pregnancy has been brutal, nausea, PPD, tiredness, suspected GD… and it’s a girl. But I do know people who have had identical pregnancies and got one of each, and people who had different pregnancies who had the same, so it’s not a science!

For some people it just gets worse with each pregnancy
