Are sonographers bothered about the sex?

Had an NHS scan at 30 weeks today to check growth (referred by midwife).

Two people in the room - one scanning one taking notes. As I was getting dressed afterwards, the one who was taking notes was asking a few things to the one who was scanning to update the notes. I was sure I heard something along the lines of "and it's a boy?"....

Would they need to record that anywhere?

Obviously a first world problem but we were hoping for a surprise, I'm just wondering if the sex is even something they would record somewhere at this stage?

Well, if they're going to record anything at all about the baby, the sex seems like something pretty important.

I'd put it out of your mind - you don't want to know, and they didn't sound sure anyway.

Did you tell them you don’t want to know?
I’ve had many scans in my third trimester & the sonographer always checked with me first if I knew the gender before saying boy or girl, which I did want to know/already knew so on my scan reports that are given back to me states the gender. During the scan they would also show me the gender on screen while doing all other checks on baby

She didn't ask but I did say while she was doing it as she said something about going down to the legs so I said oh I won't look then as we are keeping it a surprise.

You've kind of answered my question though as I wondered if it was recorded anywhere.. we didn't find out with our first either so I've never seen it written down so wasn't sure if they even did!

Was the one taking notes training? I'm a trainee radiographer and have sat in ultrasound sessions. Although I wouldn't ask that particular question until the parents had left the room!

FountainSpray · 03/01/2025 23:27

No idea if she was training or not, she didn't say..

I'm thinking it must have been what she said though as I can't think of anything relevant that sounds like / rhymes with that 🙈

When I was having my 20 week scan I informed the sonigrapher that I didn't want to know sex. I did ask them towards the end if they could tell what the sex was and they told me that it has absolutely no impact on them or the scan as to what the sex is so they don't bother looking!

FountainSpray · 04/01/2025 09:39

This was what I was hoping that it's just not relevant so there's no way she could have said it if that makes sense? Wonder if because it was 30 weeks that's not the case?

Obviously it doesn't matter I just want the baby here healthy but my curiosity is in overdrive now!

I don't think they record it anywhere, even internally. I didn't find out with either of mine, and all the notes I ever had from scans had no reference to sex on them. I think they only need to look at the major organs, spine and limbs. The only reason they look for those wanting to find out is only because the bladder and femurs are right there.

At the only growth scan (32 weeks) where I wasn't asked ahead of time if I wanted to know the sex it was nearly let slip. My mum and I were talking to each other about baby, referring to them as "he" as I (at the time) thought I was having a boy. The sonographer, who had obviously seen otherwise, asked if I had found out the sex in a concerned way. I told her no, and that I didn't want to, and she seemed very relieved when she said "oh good". Thankfully baby brain meant I was unable to put 2+2 together until after baby had arrived. Though I did change my mind a few weeks later to being 100% convinced I was having a girl. Perhaps my subconscious could still do maths

I hope you misheard, and the surprise is still preserved.
