Hi all,

I am due in June with my first baby and feeling a bit overwhelmed with what I need to buy! I saw that there is a sale on Tommee Tippee so thought that this is a good time to start buying a few bits. What products would you recommend? Thanks from a nervous mum to be

Definitely not their bottles! They're really hard for babies to latch on to because the base is far too wide.

Chiming in with the previous poster, don’t get their breast pump either. I bought one, lactation consultant said they were poor and she was right!

Hmm what do you need? Have you written a list? I had a TT plug in steriliser with my first and a microwave one (for space saving) with my second - both were good. If you're planning to formula feed you might want a perfect prep machine? People rave about them.

I would maybe write a list of what you need so as not to feel overwhelmed ? Separate into things for baby, things for mum, big items. I honestly would try and buy as little as possible and then once baby is here it will be clearer what you need. Clothes for baby, nappies, personal care items, muslins, blankets, nappy cream all essential, somewhere for them to sleep, a car seat and a pram, and then whatever bits you need for hospital bag x

Just a note on perfect prep machines - there's research suggesting it doesn't get hot enough to kill bacteria. elht.nhs.uk/application/files/4915/5533/6985/Statement_on_formula_preparation_machines_Nov_2016.pdf

i work on the infant feeding team, the bottle are not good for latching for babies are there are serious concerns over the safety of the perfect prep machine’s not making formula that is sterile. The gro bags and swaddles they make are great x

Tommy Tippee stuff that we used a lot / still use:

  • Nappy bin
  • Gro egg room thermometer (stops me mentally fussing about what sleep bag / clothes they should be wearing)
  • Sleeping bags (as above, easy to be sure they are not over/under dressed). TT ones seemed decent quality
  • Lidded cups for when they are a bit older
  • Clip on bibs for weaning (and catching vomit when they are sick...)

You could argue all the above is useless - nappy bin wasteful of liners, people raised babies for 100,000 years without thermometers, everyone makes.sleeping bags, there are better sipping cups around etc, but anyway this is what was useful for us.

Oh gosh sorry did not know that about the perfect prep, someone bought me one as a gift but I used it once it took me an hour to make a bottle and baby didn't even drink it 🤣

No worries. Hah classic baby behaviour 🤣

A friend is using the perfect prep machine, personally I wouldn’t because it doesn’t get hot enough but she had twins so she wanted something more for ease this time than the nuby rapid cool flasks she used with her previous son.

I used the Milton cold water steriliser and the mam bottles (can self sterilise in a microwave). The Tommee tippee steriliser and bottles set are still in a sealed box 21 months later. We had a Tommee tippee bottle that we tried initially but DS didn’t like it and was already used to the teats from the neonatal unit so mam worked better for us. I personally didn’t like the shape of the bottles either, quite awkward to hold like an egg timer.

I did buy the gro egg though on vinted and quite liked it for when DS went into his own room.

I'd steer clear of the bottles and perfect prep machine, we tried one and it always made DD quite sicky compared to when she had a bottle made the normal way. Have a look into nuby rapid cool flasks instead, just as easy and convenient but you make it to the correct temperature then it cools it straight away instead.
From Tommee tippee we used the swaddle bags which I found really good and the gro bags for when they outgrown them.

The NHS website now doesn't advise against prep machines explicitly, but says you should check the temp of the water with a thermometer and you need to be really hot on maintaining the cleaning cycle. Ours always puts out water at 73c so above the 70c that is recommended, but I am aware that people have previously had issues with them. https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/feeding-your-baby/bottle-feeding/how-to-make-up-a-feed/ In any case, there are plenty of other ways to make up formula if you choose to formula feed, so if you don't want to use one, you don't have to.

We use the gro egg for the room temperature, the bath thermometer, the sleep swaddle bags and the ollie the owl mini white noise machine. I didn't use any of their bottle stuff or breast pumps as there were other brands I liked more.

I have a Tommee tippee monitor that’s really good, it’s called Dreamview. It doesn’t connect to the wifi which I wanted for security.

I am currently using Tommee Tippee:

• Prep machine - used since baby started 4oz bottles. This is the smallest amount mine makes. It takes a few goes to get the formula into the bottle without too much mess and in the time limit but after a couple if times. Piece of p*ss! Highly recommend but appreciate not everyone agrees. Baby now 7 months and thriving. Very rarely sick, no reflux etc.

• Bottles - I have 2 packs - one anti colic with the stick thing inside and then just the plain old. Baby has been using them since birth (EFF) and he has a little tongue tie - zero issues with feeding.

• Steriliser - I bought the microwave steriliser from Home Bargains for about £10. Clean the bottles, add the water then chuck in the micro for 6 mins. Again, so easy. Helps that we have 10 bottles in rotation so you don’t feel you’re constantly washing and sterilising the same 4 over and over - especially in the early days when they take a lot more frequent feeds.

• Sippy cup - we started weaning early and now we’re on “chunkier” mush, I’ve been giving baby a little water with his dinner. Just a few sips here and there as he’s desperately trying to get my water glass 😂 it’s fine! Think it was also less than £2.

There’s so many things you think you need but you can get away without most of it - it’s all a money making scam 😂😂

I have used the Nuby cool once or twice but in all honesty, I just used the pre-mixed bottles of formula whenever we go out. Can’t be arsed with the faff of getting boiling water - and it makes me nervous having it say at the table in a cafe and it someone gets spilled or splashed onto the baby!

The prep machine does have maintenance involved - you replace the filter every couple of months (£15) and you need to descale with white vinegar. The machine tells you when these are coming up.
