I'm pregnant... what do I do now?

Hi all, I hope I don't sound stupid writing this thread but I'm pretty clueless!

I'm 27 and found out that I am pregnant over the Christmas period. Clearblue test says 2-3 weeks and according to my period dates etc it seems that I am around 6 weeks.

I haven't told a soul yet, so was wondering if anyone could help and let me know what the next stages are? Do I call my GP? Do I contact local midwife directly? Do I do this straight away?

I'm going to tell my mum soon and I know she'll be able to advise on the above, but I'm nervous to tell anyone at the moment for some reason.

Thanks in advance 😊

Congratulations! You can self refer to your local midwife team. Your first appointment won't be until 10ish weeks though. Good to get booked in!

SummerGardenFlowers · 01/01/2025 12:29

Congratulations! You don't have to tell anyone right away if you don't want to, but yes I'd contact the GP and tell them you've had a positive test, they will refer you to the midwife I think (it's been a long time since I had a baby!)

AmberOrca · 01/01/2025 12:29

You can wait and let the news settle in if you want. Then ring your GP surgery and tell them you’ve had a positive test and ask who you need to see and when.
With my first I had to have a confirmation appointment with a doctor then booking in with the midwife. With my second I had changed surgery and just saw a midwife.

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 01/01/2025 12:29

Depends on your area but in my area you self refer to the midwife by filling a form in online they then contact you to arrange a booking in appointment and it goes from there.

Nc546888 · 01/01/2025 12:30

My area you don’t see your GP, you pick the hospital you want and go on their maternity page and fill in an online form. Then they start sending you appointments

Jollyjoy · 01/01/2025 12:30

Yes phone the GP and they will give you a number to call to 'book in' with midwives, they'll issue a first appointment in 8-10 weeks roughly and until then it's just getting on with whatever first trimester brings.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/01/2025 12:31

We used to have to go via the GP here, but it's now self-referral to the midwifery team.

Google your local team and see what's on the website.

zinrlow · 01/01/2025 12:38

Thank you everybody. These responses are so helpful as it's my first pregnancy and I have no idea how it all works!

I have had a Google but seems that in my area there's no self referral forms etc. I'll ring my GP at some point this week and go from there x

Congratulations OP.

In my area there was a way to self refer through the website but then the GP wanted me to fill in some forms for them too.

From my first pregnancy, booking in appt was around 9/10 weeks which is about an hour with the midwife giving blood, urine sample, checking BP etc and completing a medical questionnaire with them all about you, your immediate family and babies daddy/his family.

First scan was about 13 weeks and midwife appointment 16 weeks.

The early stages of pregnancy in the UK are very very slow and you're basically on your own. No-one actually confirms your pregnancy and nothing really happens until your booking in appointment.

Esdale · 01/01/2025 15:05

Congrats OP, take a bit of time for the news to sink in if you need to. I waited a while to ring my local midwife, but they like to get you booked in before 10 weeks, so worth ringing them next week.

I found the NHS "start for life" website good with a breakdown of each week of pregnancy.

Get some folic acid or pregnancy multivitamins if you're not taking them already. Not that much else to do at this stage tbh.

AHBM2020 · 01/01/2025 15:21

Sadly agree with everyone else! I'm 6 weeks, I did my online referral 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anything, nor doubt I will for another few weeks. It's weird, as when you see the tests you expect everything in your life to change. But it is a very slow gradual change 😂 start folic acid asap, and be prepared for some symptoms. I've currently got cramps, and feel like throwing up constantly 🤢

zinrlow · 02/01/2025 10:48

Thanks everybody. It's so strange isn't it, I must have been naive to think that something would happen straight away 😂 it's weird having a positive test but nothing being confirmed, but atleast I have dry January to blame for the not drinking part!

I am taking folic acid one per day, and I will ring my GP next week and go from there. I'm tempted to book a private scan just to see that something is actually there, but I have heard mixed reviews on these - not sure if anyone has had one here?

Congratulations OP

Id recommend waiting until at least 8 weeks to have a private scan as you cant really see much before then and it can often lead to worry etc.

zinrlow · 02/01/2025 11:13

@24CRZZNKKA thank you😊 that is exactly what I have heard from others, that they have gone too early and it causes worry as nothing is really visible! Ohhh it's so hard I'm so impatient lol

Aw I know! The weeks just absolutely drag at the start

And also the odds of miscarriage drop considerably once you've seen a healthy heartbeat over 8 weeks. No guarantees of course but it's a much better time for reassurance purposes than going earlier

Pixienat91 · 03/01/2025 17:13

Congratulations
I just found out today aswell thst I'm pregnant I've done 4 tests all positive.
I didn't think it would have anymore children it's been 13 years since my son was born.

I'm 33 yet so nervous.

zinrlow · 03/01/2025 17:27

@Pixienat91 congratulations to you too! I can imagine it being a shock if you weren't expecting to have anymore. A friend of mine has a 14 year age gap with her little sister and they have a lovely relationship x

Hi all, me again!

I'm quite worried as I have just rang my local midwife team, they have passed my details on and I should expect a call back within a week.

According to my dates I think I'm 9 weeks tomorrow so I feel that I may have left it too late, by the time I get a call back I'll be 10 weeks probably! Is this late to be having my first appointment? I should have called sooner 😢

The normal is between 8 and 10 weeks - mine was 10+2 with my first pregnancy - but there are ladies who don't even know they are pregnant until later so it's not a problem if you're a bit behind this.

zinrlow · 16/01/2025 12:54

@sel2223 thank you so much. I had a call back within 10 minutes taking more details so they are aware of the date of my last period, so I feel a bit more at ease now. They'll contact me when they see fit
