am due on 27th June and booked to go away Mid August so baby should be about 6 wks old (if she on time that is). Is this too young do you think to travel?

Not at all! Just don't expect to do anything when you get there apart from look after the baby.

Plus do you have a big truck? You'll be amazed at the stuff you need for a tiny baby if it's your first.

And don't volunteer to do any of the driving - you can sleep sitting up in the back with the baby in the car seat next to you.

In my opinion its far easier travelling with a tiny baby than a Toddler, go for it.

we went away a little bit later that 6wks, but it was fine, although the car was nearly bursting with all the 'stuff' i HAD to take!

Remember that you need to stop every couple of hours to get the baby out of his/her car seat, so think about how long the journey will take. And as gagarin says, don't expect to do much other than look after the baby. But can't see any problem with it, it will be nice to have a change of scenery after the first few busy weeks. Congrats by the way, too.

we travelled to 2 different ends of the country (800 mile round trip!) to see family as it was christmas when ds was 6 weeks old.
It was very tiring but just about the right time to be getting away - before that i think i might have been too shattered.
We had a lovely time - but there were about a million people who wanted to do everything for the baby so that helped

fairylights · 02/05/2008 19:07

ps i ditto everything everyone has said about the amount of stuff you seem to need - when we got back from the aforementioned trip we went out and bought a bigger car
(but it had been a nissan micra before..we were adamant that having a baby wouldn't mean we would need a bigger car )

We had an estate and a roof box for ONE baby.

thanks for all comments. Feel better about it now. Thought I was maybe being a bit irresponsible as kept getting funny looks off people when mentioned it!

Just traded in my coupe (as to my shock and horror not baby seat compatible) for a Ford S-Max so hopefully plenty of room to take everything need.

Dizzy, we are quite civilised herei n Wales. Where are you going?

Swedes · 02/05/2008 21:17

Don't let anyone terrorise your baby with their close-harmony singing?

moondog · 02/05/2008 21:18

Keep away from harps and sheep!
Nasty buggers.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 02/05/2008 21:21

Ha, we were camping at 6 weeks.
Not Wales though. We didn;t go there till dd was old enough to have comedy misunderstandings about the lack of cetacea.

we went on holiday with all the family when ds1 was two weeks old, then relocated, to another country when he was 6 weeks old. Going away is fine! Enjoy it.
