Movements at 19 weeks

I’m a first time mum & felt my first movement on Christmas Day when I was 18+5. It was like a bubble travelled to the surface of my stomach, that’s the only way I can describe it really. Definitely wasn’t wind, it was quite a distinctive feeling.

I haven’t felt anything since though. I know baby is still small, movements can be few and far between at this stage and I was also told at a scan I have an anterior placenta. But, should I worry that it’s been 4 days without anything?

To be honest I’m an Anxious Annie at the best of times so I don’t know if I’m worrying over nothing! But it’s all new to me :)

Hiya! I wouldn’t worry lovely. Like you know, baby is still little and can hide easily, especially when you have an anterior placenta. I have an anterior placenta too and felt first movements at 19 weeks. But then I didn’t feel much at all until 21 weeks and then nothing again until maybe 24 weeks where it became a bit more strong. There were weeks after that I still couldn’t feel much still tbh! The midwife I mentioned it to said they don’t really get concerned about regular movements until 28 weeks when you should have a pattern. Luckily you will get to a point when there’s no doubt that baby is moving constantly as they give you a really big kick to remind you!

Do try not to worry - if you are panicking it might be worth mentioning to your midwife and they can show you the heartbeat. 💓

At this stage I wouldn't worry at all.

I had an anterior placenta with my first and didn't feel anything I could confidently say was baby until 22/23 weeks. It was very intermittent to begin with and I don't think we ever got into an established pattern to be honest. Every time I started to recognise a pattern, she would change positions and go behind the placenta so I couldn't feel a thing (I was in a lot with reduced movements in the 3rd trimester).

I am now 27 weeks with DD2 and felt first movements at 20 weeks. I have a posterior placenta this time so movements are much stronger this time round but they were still very hit and miss the first couple of weeks. They became more regular around 24 weeks and now there is a distinct pattern. It may still change though as I know that even at 27 weeks, baby is still tiny with quite alot of room to move around and change position.

The first sensations of feeling baby move is a gradual thing, you don't just suddenly feel them one day and that's it every single day. It will build up then you should start to see a regular pattern forming between 24 and 28 weeks.

I had the same thing, felt bubbles here and there at around 18 weeks and then nothing for a week or so. I think it is unpredictable at this point and I had the same anxieties you did. But try not to worry as I think it is very common x

Thanks all, that’s reassuring! X

Hey taylor, It's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and worry as a first-time mum, especially when everything feels so new! congrats on your first movements around this time is wonderful, and it's common for them to be sporadic at this stage. Baby is still quite small, and movements may not be consistent.

Well having an anterior placenta can act like a cushion, making it harder to feel movements early on until later in pregnancy. (many moms experience this too :))

You're doing a fantastic job, and your baby is so lucky to have you as their mum. ❤️ Every little step (or flutter!) is part of this beautiful adventure, so take it one day at a time. You've got this! 🌸
Happy new year in advance:)

@taylor2233 I felt my first movements on Christmas Day too, at 17+6 (first baby)! Felt like tiny muscle spasms or pulls. Then a day went by with nothing, and then I’ve felt them most mornings and evenings since but only 3-4 kicks each time. It now feels like proper little pushes and I can feel them from the outside if I put my hand on and apply some pressure. This morning I felt them in two places at once so it must have been stretching or dancing!

i think totally normal at the start not to feel it every day or for there to be a pattern. My midwife said 20wks = should have felt something, 24 = every day, 28wks = a pattern.

im obsessed with trying to notice them, i already feel more bonded with baby as if they’re a proper little being coming along with me everywhere ❤️
