had a private scan and the baby measures 6 weeks and 2 days but I could’ve only got pregnant at the earliest 4 weeks and 5 days ago. This now confuses my boyfriend and worries me! Is there an explanation for this? The sonographer did not want to seem to help… thanks :)

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Just sounds like the person scanning was confused and then confused you both.

you conceived 4:2 weeks ago so the baby will measure 6:2 weeks because they ALWAYS measure from the first day of your last period (generally two weeks before ovulation/conception).

The person scanning said that he wouldn’t be able to see much if the baby was only measuring 4:2 weeks which is true because 4:2 weeks from the first day of your last period would mean your baby would only be 2:2 weeks.

in your shoes I’d email the clinic and outline what the medic said and the confusion it has caused. Ask that they help him understand how dating babies works so that he can express this correctly in future scans.

It doesn't sound at all like that the scanner was confused. OP was confused and now so are you, apparently.

It doesn't sound like the sonographer was confused in the slightest.
It's the OP who is confused and not understanding how pregnancy dating works

When I went for my 12 week nhs scan I was measuring 2 days ahead and it put my date as the day before my last period started don't ask how lol I counted back and it said i conceived 22nd but my period didn't start till 23rd. Think it just depends how quick the baby grows etc

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 19/12/2024 08:41

The sonographer would absolutely not have been confused.

They do this all day long every day, and the two week discrepancy is basic pregnancy dating knowledge. He would have been reacting to OP's behaviour or maybe something she said.

The extra two weeks is theoretical - it has absolutely nothing to do with when you had sex.

You and your boyfriend need to get your heads around this so it doesn't cause issues!

Oh and congratulations! 💐

It's for very much the same reason - they 'assume' you ovulate on day 14 but you may ovulate earlier / later.. you might have implanted earlier or later.. the sperm might have been there waiting for the egg or might have arrived 24 hrs later. There's a lot of variations, it's not exact, even with IVF

Can anyone help me please. I had my ultrasound scan today and was informed I am 6weeks pregnant. But I only had sex 4 weeks ago? Is this correct

If you had read the thread you posted on you would see that yes, that's exactly correct

Yes that's normal. You count pregnancy weeks from the first day of your last period. The average woman ovulates 2 weeks into her cycle, and those 2 weeks are counted in your pregnancy. You are technically 2 weeks pregnant before you even become pregnant if it helps to think of it like that.

Kayt1993 · 26/01/2025 20:17

So my baby can still measure at 6 weeks even if you had sex 4 weeks ago. I only know it's this exact date as my partner works away and it was the only weekend he had home.

It's been explained over and over again. You're basically struggling with adding 2 and 4.

As others have said - yes that's correct.

We 'date' pregnancy from the first day of your last period - I know this is odd but it would have (and to be fair continues to be) the date most people know. For many many people this doesn't really help as they have irregular cycles and or like you they know when they conceived.. but.. that doesn't change the fact that an embryo which was technically conceived 4 weeks ago is described as 6 weeks. So although we say a pregnancy is on average 40 weeks - the first two weeks of this the woman isn't pregnant.

For now you can work out the due date by entering your details into the NHS pregnancy calculator. Then in 5-8 weeks time you should have a 'dating' scan where they'll give you an updated due date - that's the due date they'll use going forward.

If you download a pregnancy app you can see what your dates are too.
