Summersunx · 18/12/2024 21:14

Hi guys,
Does anybody use bottled water in the kettle to make babys formula up. Me and my husband drink bottled water all the time and we use it in kettle too we just don't like tap water tastes vile. So was wondering will it be ok if I use bottled water in kettle for the babys formula too or Can that not be done.
Many thanks

I thought they said not to as too many minerals or something.

Formula tastes vile anyway, I don't think the water makes any different to the taste.

Cudz · 18/12/2024 21:15

I don't think bottled water is recommended due to the sodium content. Boiled tap water is what we were always told to use.

dementedpixie · 18/12/2024 21:18

No you're not supposed to use bottled water due to the mineral/sodium content.

GreyBlackBay · 18/12/2024 21:19

Is it mineral water? Or spring? Or just 'water'?

Dont use mineral water. Any other should be fine.

NannyR · 18/12/2024 21:22

Some brands of water are ok for babies - those with low sodium content, but boiled tap water is perfectly safe to use, cheap and less plastic waste. The baby isn't going to notice slight differences in taste between tap and bottled, so it seems a no-brainer to use tap water.

Anothernamechane · 18/12/2024 21:32

It's not recommended as pps have said. Your baby really won't think tap water tastes bad and I imagine you'd be spending a fortune if you use bottled water to make up formula

Worrywort98 · 18/12/2024 22:32

You should try using a filter jug
I absolutely hate the taste of tap water and there's a really noticeable difference in taste when it's filtered. They're not too expensive esp if you're buying bottled water long term. That would be my recommendation as bottled water contains too many minerals for baby apparently

Summersunx · 18/12/2024 22:34

It's mineral water we use but I did Google and it said so long as sodium is under 20mg a litre and that Evian is a good one to use. Just wondered wether any of you guys were using bottles water

Our water is from a spring, with a high mineral content. Unsuitable got babies. We used Harrogate bottled water for our DC until they were about 2, maybe 3. We bought it in gallon containers. I thought evian and the other mineral type waters, were too 'salty'?

Did you use that water from new born for baby instead of tap water? My son is 9 days old and I'm trying to find water that i can use instead of tap water it says you can use bottled water so long as it's still boiled and dosnt have a certain ammount of sodium or sulphate I think per litre. I will have a look for the water you use

What’s the issue with tap water? Your baby is 9 days old. He has no comprehension of likes or dislikes. Just use the tap water!

Just use boiled tap water. We have perfectly good tap water in this country - buying bottled water is an enormous waste of money and plastic.

LynetteScavo · 19/12/2024 18:16

I've always wondered about this, after being told the French use Evian. Confused

Aqua carpatica is best for babies I think

Nc546888 · 19/12/2024 20:46

Wow this is bat shit crazy. Mumsnet never fails to amaze me

Peonyyyy · 19/12/2024 21:12

This is so weird, why would you use it when it’s not recommended?

plus it’s expensive and a waste of time and money

Greeneyegirl · 19/12/2024 21:31

Just use tap water or a filter jug. We did use a filter jug on our tap water with our baby because we happened to always drink from that ourselves and it stopped the prep machine and the kettle getting too scaled

pecanpie101 · 19/12/2024 23:20

Save some money and use less plastic by getting a water filter

Honestly, tap water is totally fine. If the tap water had 'a load of crap in it that's no good' then 60+ million people wouldn't be drinking it without any ill effects at all.

I understand that you don't like the taste of your tap water, but your baby will not know any different. There's absolutely no need to be buying a specific brand of water just to boil up for bottles. It must be costing you a fortune (and is a massive waste of plastic too).

It's worth getting a filter tap (much less faff than a jug). A filter lasts for months, and you have lovely filtered water (literally) on tap. When the newborn fug starts to lift, it's worth investigating.

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/12/2024 23:58

There's more regulations governing the production of mains water compared with bottled water. That reassures me its safe to drink.

Describe what your water tastes of and I may be able to find the cause. (I was a water quality advisor for my local water company).

RabbitsEatPancakes · 20/12/2024 06:04

Have you actually tasted formula? The water doesn't make a difference to the taste. It is vile already, you wouldn't drink a glass of it. Just use tap water, it's what's recommended, free and easily available.
