Hip pain when sleeping - 30 weeks help!

I’m using a pregnancy pillow and sleeping with that between my legs with my knees bent. I sleep on both sides but the pain in my hips is getting bad and I’m so uncomfortable at night. I have to keep switching to the other side because of the pain in my hips.

Has anyone got any tips/different sleeping positions to help?

Thankyou!

Sorry no advice, but just wanted to say I'm also getting the same pain at 30 weeks.

The only thing that helps mine is getting rid of my pregnancy pillow and stretching the painful leg out and turning as close to on my tummy as I can

No tips, just sympathy, I had the same.

I found the issue was the mattress. I had to spend time in a lot of hotels when I was that far gone and realised some were a lot better than others for alleviating hip pain. I went to Ikea and tried out a load of mattresses and ultimately got a new mattress topper from Ikea (the super thick squishy one that almost looks like a new mattress) and it solved it for the rest of that pregnancy and when I got pregnant again, I had no issues either. Thinner toppers might also be good, see if you can get to a massive bed shop (or an Ikea) to try some out. This was mine: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/nordberget-mattress-pad-white-30570230/

I have found that being flatter (getting rid of a pillow) helps - I would guess because it shifts some of the weight from the hips to the upper body.

But if you've got rib pain too, then I think being flatter will make that worse.

I had that in my last pregnancy and didn’t really find a solution. It even got worse where if I slept in a certain position my foot would go numb with pins and needles. That only happened on 5-6 occasions but it was horrible. I think for my foot I ended up using an additional pillow just to rest one foot on which helped. I’m only 22 weeks this time so I’m ok for now but not looking forward to that.

Thanks everyone! I’ll try without the pillow and see if that helps. If not I’ll just have to suck it up! 😂

Oh previous poster reminded me. We stayed in a hotel with a super squishy mattress and that was the only great sleep I got. It was excellent. So maybe try and go mattress shopping, if you can afford it (we couldn't:(

It’s horrible, isn’t it?

A pillow/cushion between the legs/knees helps me. Not sure why though, but give it a go!

Hope you get some relief from it.

Also agree with the above comment - softer mattresses help. Perhaps a memory foam topper?

I started each night sleeping on my left side (with pillow) until the pain woke me up, then switched to the right side until that pain woke me up, then (normally about 3am) propped myself up on a load of pillows so I was on my back, but reclining/semi-seated instead of flat. I read some research papers that said as long as you keep yourself propped to an angle of about 25 degrees then there aren't the same risks involved as sleeping flat on your back.

Also a memory foam mattress topper helped. And the physio said that keeping your lower leg straight whilst on your side minimises the pressure on your hip.

I had the same - saw an osteopath who gave me rather a painful massage that sorted it out
