When to ask GP for help - nausea

I'm almost 7 weeks (ftp) and the nausea has well and truly started. I haven't been sick athough at times feel like it would be easier if I was. I have tried eating little and often and can keep food and water down athough I don't really want to eat.
My friend had it pretty bad when she was expecting and said to speak to my GP now rather than let it go on. Will they give me anything for nausea or do they need to wait until I'm actually throwing up? I had cyclazine for an infection years ago and it made me feel more sick.

I've tried the sea bands, they were great a few days ago but not much now. I'm going to buy some ginger tea and biscuits this evening.

I feel like I'm living a constant hangover and just want to lie in bed feeling sorry for myself but unfortunately I still have to go to work like everyone else!

Any advice would be great.

Hi @Coco1oco my GP surgery have always been more than happy to help with nausea in pregnancy. With my daughter I was never actually sick and they had no issues with prescribing medication to ease the nausea I was having as I was struggling to commute and go about my daily life. With this pregnancy I was actually sick in the middle of the night and struggling to sleep for the nausea. I contacted the GP a lot earlier than previously as I knew the tablets helped so much before. Yet again they were really helpful and within a couple of days the nausea was under control. I hope yours eases for you soon x

I’m 7.5 weeks and went to the GP today as the constant nausea was becoming unbearable. I’ve not been able to do anything for days. They were really nice and really reassuring. Checked my urine for infection and dehydration which were all fine and prescribed cyclizine and said see how I get on with it and if it doesn’t help to come back. I was worried they’d think I was a drama queen but I’m glad I went now.

I’ve also been looking into B6 to help nausea. That might be something you want to look into to? I bought some earlier and am going to try it, there’s good reports that it in combo with cyclizine can be effective.

Yes go sooner than later! They prescribed me cyclizine first which did fuck all but there’s plenty of others they can prescribe so tell them about your experience and ask for another. See https://pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk For info. I was put on Prochlorperazine which really helped and lots of others on here said Xonvea helped them. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon.

I had terrible nausea and a lot of vomiting. Every time I spoke about it to midwives they said that I could get tablets but they don't usually work well and do have risks. So I rode it out. It was truly awful. I didn't have to work much luckily. If I had needed to I think I'd have had to try meds as I was vomiting 10 times a day.

Definitely go sooner rather than later! I was the exact same as you - constant nausea but never actually vomiting. I finally called the GP at 14 weeks and they were so lovely and said I should never have suffered that long before calling. There’s usually a few different medications they can try so if one hasn’t worked for you in the past, there’ll be others they can suggest/prescribe. Wishing you a smooth pregnancy xx

Yes call them tomorrow!!

I've had nausea from 5 weeks, was signed off work from weeks 6-10 as couldn't cope. I've not actually been sick but the nausea is debilitating. I've had cyclizine and prochlorperazine. I wouldn't say they are wonder drugs but have taken the edge off. I'm now 11 weeks and nausea has improved a lot and not needed any tablets since Friday (although I have them on standby haha)

As soon as it's making day to day life a challenge. I've never had any issues getting antiemetics. Make sure to ask about the maternity exception certificate too so you don't have to pay for the prescription
Take time off work if you need too or ask for adjustments
My boss pretty much banned me from the office in my last pregnancy as I have form for struggling in when I would be better off at home! In a previous pregnancy it led to fall that meant a trip to a and E for a sprained ankle. I couldn't put weight on it for a week.
When WFH I'm allowed to go for a lie down when I need a break and can take the day at a slower pace when I don't also have to factor in a commute.

My midwife told me at my booking in appointment that you don't get medals for it, so go to the doctor. 😊 It started to affect what I could do in a day - I get like I almost couldn't leave the house or go too far, just in case I threw up. If it's bothering you, go.

(Ginger tea and biscuits won't touch mine - they've just made me enjoy Christmas food less because I now associate ginger with being sick 🥴)

Thanks everyone, got the GP this morning. They've given me cyclazine and it's helped a good bit today! Going to look into b6 too as every little helps! I can't wait for this to pass
