Should I cancel a holiday at 30 weeks?

We have a longstanding trip booked skiing in France this coming February when I'll be 30 weeks (obviously I won't ski while there). My parents are taking our family for my mum's 60th so it was in the diary before I was pregnant!

I have tried to think through everything that could happen (early birth and NICU, hospitalization there for rest of pregnancy, even just getting to hospital to check reduced movements etc) so that my husband and I can at least make an informed decision on whether it's worth the risk. I know the worst case scenarios are unlikely but if we do decide to go I want to know what could be involved and ensure we've got the right insurance and so on.

I'm leaning towards not going but everyone else has said just to go and it will be fine you're potentially still 10 weeks out from birth! Not sure whether I'm now over thinking it!

Wondered whether anyone else had travelled at this point in their pregnancy for a holiday and whether it's worth it?

Thanks so much xx

I’d go!

At 30 weeks I'd go, unless you've had a complicated pregnancy or have medical worries. Take plenty of things to amuse you though, if everyone else will be skiing.

Are you driving or flying? I would be more likely to go if I had my own transport available 24/7 for the worst case scenarios you suggest.

Make sure you advise your insurer and also have a ehic/ghic card

I’d go. If you’ve had a low risk pregnancy and there’s nothing to indicate the chance of early labour then I wouldn’t say there’s too much to worry about. 30 weeks will be a nice stage of pregnancy to go away and celebrate with family.
Maybe just make yourself aware of the nearest hospital or medical care in the unlikely chance something may happen. But go enjoy yourself before you get too big and uncomfortable to travel!

I'd go as long as you get the go ahead from your midwife.
Assuming you are going to an European country with good healthcare so if the worst happens you'll be ok.
Just make sure you have the best insurance policy you can get too!

Big comfy chair, footstool, cushions, snuggly blanket and a hot chocolate. Relax and enjoy the mountain air!

Where are you and what is the healthcare like - we went to a lovely Austrian Resort halfway up a mountain but the only medical care there were private doctor clinics - the hospital was a 45 minute drive away (DS needed medical care)

check the terms of your insurance as well

check out costs the GHIC does NOT mean free health care just the equilvalent healthcare of a national of that country - France for example has costs attached - we just had to pay an outstanding bill out of my FIL estate for €130 euro hospital bill and that is with a GHIC card (insurance was no longer valid)

are yuh driving or flying - how easy is it to get around to places you would need to get too

ChateauMargaux · 15/12/2024 15:55

Where are you going to? Would it help if I shared details of the hospitals nearby? ( I live in France, near Geneva.. and have some knowledge of the hospitals near some of the ski resorts).

Mumblemumb · 15/12/2024 15:56

Definitely go, it sounds lovely! 30 weeks is still pretty early, unless you’ve got particular risk factors or complications. You shouldn’t put your life on hold for potentially 10+ weeks.

Go and have a great time; take out medical insurance.

WalterdelaMare · 15/12/2024 15:59

Go! Pregnancy should not stop you. I’d also ski, but that’s your personal choice.

Tiswa · 15/12/2024 16:18

No but you need to do sensible planning first insurance can be invalidate by pregnancy between 28 to 32 weeks so that needs checking plus the other stuff I mentioned
