Severe Nausea

Hi all,
I'm currently really quite unwell and struggling very badly with persistent nausea. I am not vomiting which is a positive but the nausea is so bad that I am struggling to eat, I am sleeping hours and hours a day just to prevent feeling this bad, I am struggling to get out of bed etc. I saw my dr yesterday and we discussed my options but as I'm still only 6 weeks, I decided against medication as all the anti sickness meds are unadvised in pregnancy and I am really scared for what the consequences may be if I do take the medication. This being said, I am struggling and if I do begin to deteriorate even more then I will probably have to go on medication. I just wondered if anyone had been through similar and would be able to advise me on what to do. I had an evening of relief using pressure bands but they don't work all the time. I am trying to eat bland foods but I feel none of it is helping.
Thank you

I don't think all the anti-sickness meds are unadvised in pregnancy as plenty of women have to take them at some point in their pregnancy. I would try and speak further with your GP or get a second opinion about that as it's also not healthy for your baby if you can't get some calories in you. Hope you turn a corner soon Biscuit

@moondip - Thank you lovely, I'll try for a second opinion as he did say thousands of women get prescribed them but they are unadvised and he did show me one specific drug where the manufacturer even writes it is unadvised. However if it gets worse I will go on it. I think it's more so maybe how early I am still? I'm unsure, I just know this is really rough 😂

Ask for Xonvea. It's a pregnancy specific medication that's licenced for anti sickness.

Harriet1989 · 13/12/2024 10:16

The NICE guidelines for the NHS have the details of which are safe to use in pregnancy. As PP said Xoneva is licenced for use in pregnancy, I'm starting on prochlorperazine as my GP advised she sees better results and it's still safe to use

I totally get not wanting to medicate - I was the same but I'm 6 weeks and struggling to get through a day like you so unless I give up on doing anything for the next 8-10 weeks I need to get through it somehow

@Harriet1989
@Dullblue1234
I have another GP appointment with someone different today and I'm going to ask about all this as none of this was told to me yesterday. Thank you very much. It's really hard isn't it? I'm also 6 weeks and I haven't left my bed in days because I physically can't without feeling unwell.
I hope you improve on your medication ml! Was honestly gutted when he said it was unadvisable so hoping a different GP will give me a different answer xx

There absolutely are anti sickness medications that can be given in pregnancy. My GP always has the pregnancy sickness guidance page up listing the lines of treatment and shows me what is recommended.
First line is usually cyclizine or similar

I would see a different GP

OptimisticRealist2024 · 13/12/2024 16:09

My GP prescribed me cyclizine for morning sickness and terrible all-day nausea.

It's not ethical to carry out clinical trials on pregnant women so it's really just a case of looking at the real world on this one - so many women have been prescribed cyclizine for nausea/sickness that we'd know if it caused birth defects or harmed the baby by now.

I take mine sparingly to reduce the risk, one a day, strategically taken on days where I have to travel or have lots of meetings -- but the GP hasn't explicitly told me to do this.

There's a website that says which medicines are risky: https://www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/leaflets-a-z/cyclizine/

Did cyclizine help @OptimisticRealist2024? How quickly did it work? I definitely feel like I could do that, just take it on the days I really need it (it's my daughter's birthday party tomorrow and I could really do with feeling better than this!)

OptimisticRealist2024 · 13/12/2024 18:05

@Harriet1989 It does...sort of. I tend to wake up about 5am for a wee and I take it then because it takes a while to kick in and does make me really sleepy. If I take it when I normally wake for work I'm like a zombie around 10/11am (not ideal).

It did work from day 1 when I was about 8/9 weeks and miserable. But timing has to be strategic because I feel so sleepy.

You can take it up to three times a day (one every 8 hours) but tbh the first dose at 5ish gets me through the morning so I can eat breakfast and lunch. I think being able to keep the food down all morning and actually having food in my system helps me to feel less sick for the rest of the day. So I only really end up needing that first dose. 😊

I do start to feel sick before bed but I think I've just trained myself to sleep through it so don't bother taking them before I go to bed.

Hi guys! Thank you all, I managed to see a different GP who prescribed promethazine - I took my first one last night and it seems to have helped so fingers crossed it continues to do so!! 🤞🏻
