Hi guys 2 days after c section just wanted to ask any new mums who have basically been told they don't need the injections for blood clotting if they are low risk etc as that's what I've been told and my midwife queried with hospital but they said I don't need them. Is this a new thing many thanks

I'm not due to have my third c section until next week but I definitely remember my last one 3 years ago I wasn't given the blood thinning injections but my first one 8 years ago I was. The key difference between the first and second was I laboured with my first and had an epidural and then required an emergency c section so I would estimate I was on the bed immobile for around 16-20 hours. My second one was an elective and I was up and moving around within 6 hours.

I think if you're up and about and mobile there probably isn't any reason to give them to you because really it's only if your laying/sitting around not able to move.

I was never considered high risk and I had the injections, there was never a discussion about it

Weird I got them both times with previous c sections and I’ve looked it up and can’t see any risks for me (young and fit and healthy? No chronic conditions)

louisianachild · 12/12/2024 21:58

Had an elective c section earlier this year and didn’t have them. Can’t remember it being discussed.

LimeCookie · 12/12/2024 22:00

Had a c-section, never mentioned to me, didn’t even know this was a thing!

Disturbia81 · 12/12/2024 23:12

Didn't have them first time in 2016. Had them since for section and then full hysterectomy

Summersunx · 13/12/2024 04:03

I think it's if you've been lying in bed long after the surgery or something the risk is higher from what I've kinda read up about it. Thanks guys

I had emergency C-section last year and didn't have any injections after

Newmum2610 · 13/12/2024 06:25

Had my baby October 23 didn't get any injections because I didn't lose a lot of blood during the c section. No complications at all

california22 · 13/12/2024 06:32

It depends on your risks factors.
For example you get 1 point for elective section and 2 for emergency. You will get the injections with two points or more, so if your risk factor is only elective section then you don't get them.
Other risks factors are over 35yo, bmi over 30, preterm birth, preeclampsia, history of dvt, blood loss of over 1L, sepsis, twins... these are the most common.
With my DD I had an elective and only that risk so I didnt get them but now I'm over 35yo so elective plus age will mean they will prescribe them for me.
