Hi I just wanted to see if anyone could advise me. I got a bath this evening, it was hot but not boiling. About an hour after getting out I had a really big gush of fluid coming from my vagina, since iv had small leaks of water, Could this be just bath water or sac fluid? I haven’t had any pain just these gushes.

I would ring labour ward to get it checked if it could be your waters breaking. It can be slow/ smaller amounts if the babies head is already low down. It is just a swab test I think, as I was unsure with my first pregnancy at one point but turned out it wasn’t. Wear a pad to absorb any further leakage as this will help them assess you as well.

Hi there it's a midwife . You need to ring the Maternity assessment unit and let them know. I suspect they will invite you to come for an assessment as your waters might have broken. It's not the end of the world at 33 weeks. However if your waters are broken you should be offered antibiotics to keep infection at bay. Please ring the Maternity assessment unit ASAP

Edited

I was wearing some shorts and they are soaked, I know my hospital pregnancy unit is very busy and I don’t want to waste there time if it’s just bath water x

You're not a doctor or midwife so this decision is not for you to make. You need to contact the hospital

ForDaringNavyOP · 11/12/2024 20:53

Definitely better to ring them and let them decide. As the poster above said it is important for you and the baby to have antibiotics if waters break but labour doesn’t start soon enough.

As with all later pregnancy things, it is better to be safe than sorry and the hospital will feel the same. Don’t worry about wasting their time, you aren’t.

Newuser75 · 11/12/2024 21:17

Definitely ring them. If it's your waters the longer you leave it the more chance the baby is at risk of infection.
That's literally what they are there for. They won't mind!

TheThreeMiracles · 11/12/2024 21:28

It's not bath water though, you don't get out the bath get dressed and then have soaking shorts ! Please please please phone maternity and get checked ! Sorry to be blunt but you do need to be checked you are not wasting anyone's time

Slightly dramatic response above.

You do need to call triage and go in for assessment. You're preterm. Just go. Why are you questioning it.

I am a midwife and it does sound like waters.

Bath water doesn't soak pants, you know that.

As a midwife, you should know that it is not dramatic, if she does not go what the consequences are !

Honestly how would it be bath water?

Mintyt · 12/12/2024 05:08

Even if the unit is busy, you need to be checked and looked after. Pls go and get checked. Keep yourself and your baby safe. If it's bath water panic over. If your leaking waters start treatment,

countrygirl99 · 12/12/2024 07:16

This is how both my labours started. 2nd time at 36 weeks I knew what was happening but told by a midwife that it wasn't possible and waters breaking is always an unmissable flood. Baby was born 4 hours later.

Thank you for the update. Some women do get watery discharge towards the end of pregnancy. However it is always important to rule out waters breaking as intact waters is a natural barrier against inflection.
