So the conflicting advice on this cheese is ridiculous- and it’s my only craving and suffering with HG- cravings are none existent.
NHS says as stilton is a hard cheese it’s fine to eat, so do many other websites! However on the back of the cheese it says this!?!

Stilton!?

You could eat it cooked to be on the safe side?

sel2223 · 11/12/2024 15:20

I heat it up first

My craving is red wine 🤦‍♀️ and I don't even drink! Haven't it 7 years! It's just annoying.

It's to do with moisture content. Hard cheeses are safer as they have lower moisture for bacteria to thrive on. Soft mould ripened and soft blue cheeses have a higher moisture content which is why you should heat them before eating them.

@AmberM223 I feel your pain, I was eating tonnes of Stilton as in my last pregnancy it was the only ‘safe’ blue cheese explicitly listed on the NHS website, so I merrily chomped my way through loads of it until I spotted this on the last packet (which I had eaten in a single sitting). Anyway I did a load of research and long story short, the Food Standards Agency did a review, they didn’t change their guidance but the NHS decided to remove the explicit reference as a result because although the risk is almost nil, if you do get listeriosis (and there is a small theoretical risk), it’s a massive problem for you and baby. On balance I think it’s probably still fine given there hasn’t been an outbreak linked to Stilton in the uk since the 1980s, at which point it was still unpasteurised (which it isn’t allowed to be now). Main fact source here: https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2024/01/fsa-and-fss-assess-listeria-risk-from-blue-cheese/

FSA and FSS assess Listeria risk from blue cheese

According to two UK food agencies, the likelihood of vulnerable people contracting listeriosis from blue cheese is very low. A Food Standards Agency (FSA)

The nhs guidance on it is over cautious and not reasonable.

Spaceid · 12/12/2024 11:34

I ate Stilton pretty much constantly! It’s just to cover the producers.
