VBAC induction due to unstable lie

hi all,
My baby seemed to be moving and turning around a lot now mainly between breech and head down. since week 38 he was head down as soon I’ve reached 39 weeks he went breech and today at 39+4 he is head down.
consultant said if you want to try for a VBAC is best we induce you as your baby has an unstable lie. he did say going on spontaneous labour is better but he said in your case your baby might be breech when we book in for induction 39+5 tomorrow basically.
i really want VBAc but read with induction my chances for success is very slim.
what do you guys think ? any positive stories ? xx

Personally, if your chances of VBAC are low I’d rather have an elective section than emergency.

I think I agree with PP, but I’d always err on the side of caution with these things, for both your baby and yourself. DS was born by ELCS 5 weeks ago because he was breech and it was actually a lovely experience, even though it was in theatre and hadn’t been our ‘first choice’ birth. Good luck with everything whatever you decide!

Why did you have C-section the first time?

I was persuaded to VBAC the second time, went just the same as the first (baby not descending, not dilating) and ended up with another EMCS. Looking back, I should have listened to the community midwife and the EPU midwife who said that they'd go for another c-section in my case, rather than the VBAC midwife who had the line that ever labour was different....

I guess what I'm saying is, try to take a step back and be realistic about your chances of success, given what you know about your first labour.

My ob wouldn’t induce for vbac, he said it puts too much pressure on the scarabs increases the chance of the scar rapturing.
it Ended up meaning that at 40 week plus 2 days, when bub was still showing zero interest in coming that I had another c section.
Was it my first choice - no. But it went really well I healed faster the second time and Bub and I were both safe

@Bibiddi glad it all went well for you!!
do you think it’s possible to go for VBAC after 2 c sections ? or does that mean c section from the 2nd section onwards xx

@BearOnABlanket i was fully dilated first c section and they went ahead due to fetal distress, my consultant said they’ve could’ve used forceps and i have a good chance.
my question is if i go for c section now, does that mean i’ll have c sections in all future births ?

Honestly (and I'm generally pro vbac having had 2 myself) I think I would probably go for an elective section in your shoes. Chances of a successful vbac are highest if your next pregnancy is straightforward, labour is spontaneous interventions aren't needed. You've got a lot going on. I'm no expert but I would think that the unstable lie on it's own would significantly increase the risk of needing a section even if you'd not had one before, and induction carries its own risks of course.
I understand why you might want to try, and you're right, vbac after 2 sections is rare (though not impossible ) so it is likely that if you have a section this time and later a third baby it will be a section again. But it does sound like the odds are against you, and personally, I would opt for a nice calm planned section over a potentially very stressful induction with a high likelihood of ending in an emergency section anyway. Obviously that's my personal view and I wouldn't say you would be "wrong" to still try for a vbac, but I think you need to be prepared for a section either way really.
I'm sorry you have such a difficult decision and I hope all goes well whatever you decide.

@MrsAvocet I fully agree with you. difficult to accept but you’re absolutely right!

My advice? Just let go of the idea that pushing a baby out of your vagina is a magical experience that needs to be experienced by all women. I can see you’re grasping at straws that you’ll be able to do it one day, but I PROMISE you it’s extremely overrated.

I know there’s so much peer pressure to do it naturally, but it’s a con. When your children are older you’ll be able to look back and see how hard you’re being on yourself.

I can understand your disappointment. Whilst of course we all know safety of our babies and ourselves is the most important thing it's OK to feel sad about an experience that you wanted but probably won't now have. It's natural to find that difficult.
Try to focus on the positives of a planned section. There are plenty, and it can be a very positive experience. Have a think about what you can do to make it special for you and try to think of it as different rather than lesser than the birth you imagined.

I had 2ELCS for unstable lie. Vaginal birth not an option .Both births brilliant and calm.**

MumToBe2002 · 16/12/2024 20:34

@natwalesrug thanks for sharing and really glad all went well :)

do you mind to share if you find out the reasons of the unstable lie ? was excess fluid, small baby etc. ? I am keen to understand causes!
