Flying long haul - third trimester

Hi all,

I would be keen to hear anyone's experiences or tips for flying long haul while pregnant.

I will be flying from London to SE Asia (with a stopover) at 28 weeks and then flying back at 31 weeks. I am medically considered fit to fly and have had a comfortable pregnancy so far (though I do know that things can change!)

In terms of additional factors:

  • I'm visiting family and so would have a lot of support if there were any issues and I needed to have the baby there. Obviously wouldn't be ideal, but I'd have a great support network and be able to stay there for as long as needed to recover
  • I'd have access to very good medical care while I'm there - the quality would be comparable to the UK
  • I've checked with my insurance and they've confirmed that they would cover any pregnancy-related care as well as the care of my baby (even if born prematurely and in NICU) until I was able to bring them back to the UK
  • I've bought compression socks and planning to drink plenty of water, take regular walking breaks during the flight etc.
  • I'll have a fit to fly certificate and my maternity notes readily available

As I say, would be great to hear from anyone else who has completed a long-haul flight whilst in the second/third trimester. I appreciate it won't be the most comfortable journey but keen to find ways to feel as comfortable as possible, as I'm feeling a little apprehensive about it all!

Thanks in advance

Only that I was treated amazingly, escorted through any queues, bags carried for me. It was enough for me to consider buying a fake pregnancy belly for future trips!
