12kg weight gain in first 20 weeks

im hoping someone can help me. As the title suggests I have gained 12kg in 19/20 weeks.
This is my second baby and I actually got pregnant more than 12kg lighter than I did the first time, so thought I was starting this pregnancy in a great position.
I started at 64.4kg, lost weight between weeks 6 and 12 to 61.5kg and I’m now I’m 76.7kg! I’m not eating badly and I do 12-140000 steps a day. My fear is I have prior history of being overweight (when I was 20 I lost 30kg and I’m now 34 and whilst I have yoyo’d a bit I’ve never been that heavy again).
Like I said I lost all my baby weight from my first pregnancy and more but all the literature on pregnancy is saying I’ve basically gained all the weight I should for the entire pregnancy and I’m only half way.
I keep hoping weight gain will slow down but I’m averaging 2kg a week and I’m really struggling with it. I definitely don’t have the best relationship with my body, bur have worked really hard to become healthy and fit over the last decade. I plan my meals and I am active. I know I can lose it the other end, I’m just not the what’s going on with my body right now and if it’s effecting the baby!!
any advice? I actually feel really embarrassed that this is happening as it looks and feels like I’m doing something wrong?

Women gain different amounts, I shouldn’t worry. I went from 9 stone to 14(!) but lost it all afterwards. As long as you’re eating reasonably healthily. Though you might want to have a test for gestational diabetes just in case.

It is quite a lot, as you say, you only really need to gain 8-12kg in an entire pregnancy. Could it be a measuring error?! If that isn't the case then trying to moderate what you're eating might be sensible - appreciate terrible time of year for this. It sounds like you're very active which is great, so presumably it is that your intake is too high (and maybe higher than you realise). All the obvious stuff like reducing processed food and sweet stuff, plenty of protein and veg.

I have found the weight going on more easily with my second pregnancy. I gained 8-9kg in total for my first but have gained 6kg already with my second and am 26 weeks. It does feel harder to manage this time. My weight gain has slowed down a bit since 14-16 weeks having said that, so you might see the same soon.

I'd try not to worry about it too much, being mindful will hopefully be enough to moderate it a bit and it sounds like you did an amazing job losing weight the first time round. Gaining a bit more than needed won't harm the baby. Try to go easy on yourself 😊

Yeh just seems wild. I’m relatively mindful with food, it’s not my first rodeo when it comes to managing what I eat and keeping an eye on, as I have my entire adult life and really learnt how to do it healthily. There were a few weeks after I stopped feeling nauseous that all I could stomach was crap… bur that was 2 months ago and only lasted a few weeks. I’m eating much more mindfully and healthily and like I said - active. And the weight isn’t slowing down.
its like my body is adamant it’s pregnant weight is going to be what it was the first time. Like I said, I know I can lose it but it’s just the fear something is wrong.
my consultant said she didn’t want to send me to have the test for gestational diabetes because she thought I didn’t need it - even though I told her at 17 weeks I had already gained 10 kg 🤷🏻‍♀️

Push for the GD test if you feel it’s necessary. But really I lost a huge amount of weight very quickly post birth as I had terrible water retention! Do you know where you’re gaining weight? For me it was absolutely everywhere!

TwixForTea · 10/12/2024 13:29

Hiya … water retention?

I found that nausea was eased by snacking - an easy way into eating too much without realising

I remember reading with dc2 that the extra calorie intake to support growing a baby is equivalent to one piece of toast per day. I’ve got no idea if that is actually true but it helped me ignore hunger pangs and have a salad to fill a hole instead of believing I had a free pass

Definitely don’t diet, keep up your fluids (if you have water retention ironically it will
help), focus on eating vegetables and maybe just watch balance of dairy/snacks/fatty food

I was the same. I gained loads in the first and second trimester but very little in my third. Basically in my third, I only gained the actual baby weight and maybe a bit extra, but not huge. We're all different. Take it easy, it's a hard hard time.

Yes I’d say everywhere. It is hard to tell as I lost a lot of weight previously so have a little extra skin on my lower stomach, which just generally makes my tummy look bigger. But definitely on my arms, legs, bum, tummy and thighs. But that’s fat surely? I think I will push for GD test. I’m actually moving hospitals so going in for a booking app next week so I think I’ll stress how much and how quick this weight has come on. Like 2kg a week seems obscene numbers!?
People keep telling me I’m pregnant and to enjoy it and not weigh myself. But I’m not eating for two, I probs eat between 1800 and 2200 cals a day, I started at 64.4 and am 5 ft5 - I eat a nutritious healthy diet pretty much with occasional treats, and I’m active. Admittedly not a massive gym goer but active on the whole. Just seem to be defying what is actually possible over here.
