BIG BABY

I’m 35+5 today, and I’ve been for a growth scan. My baby is estimated at weighing 8lbs 3 already! I have an appointment next week to book in either an early induction or a c-section I have been looking into it and I would really prefer a natural birth but I am so worried. Has anyone had an early induction and how did it go? I can’t believe it. My first born was a relatively large baby, he was 8lbs born and he was two weeks early, but 8lbs already?? With a month to go?!!! Please any advice/ personal stories that might make me feel better would be so much appreciated

My first was 10lb 3 oz , vaginal delivery at term , it went all down hill from then - baby in scbu for a night , I had a huge bleed requiring a transfusion and topped it off by fainting and smashing my head on a bidet . I had an elective section for my second - was out of hospital quicker , up and about better , driving within 2 weeks .Sorry that didn’t actually sound reassuring when I’ve read it back but my advice would be opt for the section unless of course your first delivery was a breeze in which case I doubt slightly bigger would make that much difference . Best wishes .

My second was about that - measured 6lb+ at just before 33 weeks, had a natural birth with him at 40 weeks at 10 and a half pounds. It was a much easier birth and faster recovery than my first, who was a little over 9lb.

But I think if the medical team is worried then it's worth looking at your options. If your first came early then your second may too? It might work to set a cut off date after which you'd consider intervention.

I think they gain about half a pound a week over the last month so if you delivered at term you'd be looking at a 10 pounder which may well be fine for a vaginal delivery.

Following with interest. They are also saying mine is big. I have another scan tomorrow. Had a terrible induction first son so really don't want another one.

Just wanted to add as well their estimations aren't 100% accurate, the day I went into labour I'd had a scan where they estimated 7lb 13oz, he was born the following day at 6lb 13oz!

The measurements really aren't accurate at all to be honest, I was consistently told my baby was measuring above the 99th centile in the third trimester - estimated to be about 9lbs full term probably. Actually was only 7lbs 1 at 39+4. I was induced because of this and didn't have a great induction in all honesty and wish I hadn't listened to the big baby scaremongering. However if you have previouslt birthed a big baby it may be more likely you will this time so would give it a think over. Just be prepared inductions can be lengthy and increase the need for interventions and emergency c sections so bare that in mind with your decision making.

It's so hard to make a decision. I was induced, everything failed (3 gels and balloon), while waiting for a section I went into spontaneous labour, had a stressful birth (so quick i had no time for any pain relief, babies heart dropped, rushed to theatre for GA but at the last moment the baby was so low I had an episiotomy and ventouse delivery) Despite that, my recovery was super easy and I was so glad I didn't have a section in the end!

Could you say you'll try induction and if nothing happens within 2 days or so you'll opt for a section?

I have heard that growth scans are quite inaccurate and so were mine. I've also heard that women who are induced are more likely to have emergency sections and instrumental deliveries so bear that in mind. My instrumental delivery and cut were honestly fine, I barely had any pain at all, but I think I was lucky with that.

Good luck with whatever you decide, either way you will be fine and your baby will be safe and warm in your arms soon! X

Mine was born by section at just under 37 weeks weighing 10lbs 4oz. A section was scheduled for the following week but I guess the boy wanted out!
It was fine. He was fine (and is now 21).

Yeah this is a good point to consider actually. My first was 8lb 6oz at 39 weeks but was measuring smaller on scans than this one (but still big) so I probably am in for a larger one.

I’m in exactly the same situation, been told throughout pregnancy that he’s measuring around 98th percentile, and this is my first pregnancy so I have absolutely no idea which option to go for!! I’m 38 weeks today, currently just seeing how it goes but doctors recommending that I book in an induction or c-section around or slightly after due date. Would be great to hear from you what option you went with in the end and how you found it if you’re comfortable sharing!
