Hi, has anyone in the UK been prescribed trimethoprim as a recurrent UTI prophylaxis? I've been prescribed 100mg every night, but after coming across some controversial information online, I'm unsure how to proceed or whether there are alternative options. Even the leaflet says "do not use in pregnancy ". I double checked with my hospital and they sadi it was ok cos I'm past 12 wks, currently 24. But has anyone used it? Its my first pregnancy after years of trying and I'm anxious. Thank you.

All leaflets say not to take the medicine in pregnancy, it's just to cover themselves. If you look at medications that are actually known to be dangerous in pregnancy, they have very visible warning signs. It will be fine to take it, especially as you doublechecked.

Hi there it's a midwife. Most medications used in pregnancy aren't cleared for use in pregnancy. It's simply not possible to run research trials with pregnant women anymore, for all sorts of reasons. In pregnancy doctors tend to prescribe drugs which have been in use for many years without ill effects. Please do take trimethoprim as prescribed. A UTI is a well-known trigger for premature labour which would be a far worse outcome
