Would you ever buy maternity clothes in advance, even before you are pregnant?

I am asking because I am one of those people that show very big, very early (6 weeks and 5 and a half weeks in my last 2 pregnancies). We are TTC'ing, and because we don't have any shops in town that sell maternity clothes, I am wondering if I should start to make a collection of the basic items, for whenever the time comes, so I am not banking on a hair bouble to hold my trousers up, and tops that don't cover my belly, while waiting for clothes to be delivered.

I think if I just stick to the basics, then even if it takes 6 months to get pregnant (so I'd be needing more wintery clothes) then I can't go too far wrong, can I?

Am I taking the TTC'ing too far mad, or is it sensible?

Eh?? You can have maternity clothes delivered in 2-3 days. Once you find out you are pg then place an order and they will arrive before you start to show! Or alternatively go shopping and you get them straightaway .

Actually is this thread serious??????

I think its sensible actually. I have got some and I am only 7 weeks as there aren't any shops round here that sell Maternity clothes.

schneebly · 30/04/2008 07:48

I wouldn't but I understand where you are coming from - I am TTC (or now maybe waiting for a few months to ttc) and almost bought a buggy because it was SUCH a good deal

schneebly · 30/04/2008 07:49

But I would deffo start buying clothes as soon as I got pg if I was goinfg to need them quickly

kayzisexpecting · 30/04/2008 07:50

I wish I had with DS. I literally woke up one day at about 12 weeks with a huge bump and I had no clothes at all that fit.

NatalieJane · 30/04/2008 07:50

Yep very serious.

Problem is when I was pregnant with DS2, I found out on the Thusday night, by Saturday morning I was already looking 6 months pregnant (and I am not being OTT about that!)

Have already said, can't go shopping and get them, so will be waiting for them to be delivered.

I am not talking my whole maternity wardrobe, I am on about a pair of trousers/jeans and a couple of tops, just to get me through the first few days, till the rest has been delivered.

I know it sounds insane, and am actually quite about it, but is it that much of a big deal?

It does sound a bit insane. How about getting some really stretchy non-maternity clothes instead, that can expand with you whilst you wait for others to arrive?

schneebly · 30/04/2008 07:53

No - it's not that much of a big deal and if you feel that it is the sensible thing to do for your situation then just do it

belgo · 30/04/2008 07:55

I wouldn't buy them until I was pregnant. Do you not still have maternity clothes from your previous pregnancies?

schneebly · 30/04/2008 07:55

BTW - I went to an NCT Baby Day and tour of the local Mat Unit and I am not even pg! Part of the reason was to support a friend who was organising it but I also recently moved to the area and wanted to see what the Mat Unit was like I had people looking at my tummy trying to decide if I was pg or just fat!

fym · 30/04/2008 07:57

get them mail order when you need them....

you may be a funny shape or a different size to what you think!

belgo · 30/04/2008 07:58

But it is typical though to see loads of nice maternity clothes when you are not pregnant - and suddenly they all disappear when you are pregnant

2point4kids · 30/04/2008 07:59

I'd wait. If you found out you were pg today and ordered stuff straight away then by some miracle got a massive bump tomorrow then you would still only have a day or two of 'making do' till the clothes arrived!

If you wait then you wont waste money getting the wrong season stuff or full price stuff when it could be reduced by the time you get pg...

Have you got some old stuff you can keep hold of just in case or a friend who has been pg and has some clothes tucked away that you can borrow if the worst comes to the worst and all the online maternity clothes suppliers sell out of stock on the day you get a bfp??

pointydog · 30/04/2008 08:02

Haven't you already got pregnancy stuff to get you through a few days while you wait for deliveries?

NatalieJane · 30/04/2008 08:04

Nope haven't got any maternity stuff left after giving it all to my sister, who sold them on eBay (Grrrr!)

LOL Schneebly! I am not that bad!! LOL

I haven't even looked at maternity stuff, well not for a couple of months!!

I just think it would be the best thing to do in my situation, but at the same time, don't want to ermmmmm, I don't know really.

No point IMO in getting super stretchy stuff, might as well just get maternity and have it through out the pregnancy, otherwise I'd be buying two lot's IYSWIM?

Looking on the bright side, at least I do get a decent amount of wear out of maternity stuff!! LOL

Hatrick, that is the plan, I just want to get a pair of trousers, and maybe a top or two, nothing flashy, just basic stuff to get me through the wait for some being delivered.

The big problem I have is that if I was pregnant say next month, if I do the whole bouble thing/normal top, my belly (which isn't pretty) would be on show, if it was winter, I can away with it outside because I'd have a coat on, but if it happens over the summer, I will look pretty silly with a big coat on.

Right I am away now, will check back later

NatalieJane You obviously want to have a pair of jeans and some tops in for the bump you are hoping for. So do it. It will put your mind t rest. Won't cost a fortune. Those kind of things can be worn all year round, and you can always sell them on Ebay if, worst luck, it turns out you don't need them in the end.

Like you, we have no "propoer" shops nearby. When bump began to show I made do for a few days, became an Ebay demon, borrowed some stuff from friends and made a special trip into the Big City. That was only a month ago and I now seem to have more maternity clothes than I need.

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 08:30

not me, but I do look at more roomy tops and think 'well that would be good if I do get pregnant'. I am hoping I can borrow from friends!

Disenchanted · 30/04/2008 08:32

I did.

I got them from ebay and here over a few months whilst TTC. Now Im 7 weeks Im in them all!
