Hi!
Had a 20 week scan which indicated boy.
But!
Have had two NHS scans since, at 34 and 36 weeks, and they can't see the genitals due to the baby's size and position.
I really want to make sure 100% that its a boy before I tell our other child.
The only private scan place near us doesn't book gender scans after 32 weeks.
Has anyone had this experience? Is there anything we can do apart from just wait for birth?
Or should I just trust that the 20 weeks was definitely correct?

Thanks!

You could have the NIPT, it's expensive though

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 06/12/2024 15:46

You could get a sneak peek test to know the gender

RubyRedBow · 06/12/2024 15:46

I’d just wait until the birth now.

sel2223 · 06/12/2024 15:49

I think at 36 weeks I'd just wait and enjoy the surprise

Is NIPT always accurate?
I've heard bad things about sneak peak ☹️

Any reason you are doubting the 20 week scan?

ImE they only say if they are pretty certain. The y couldn't get a clear view with my younger DD, so wouldn't say either way. Just more likely girl as no obvious bits.

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/12/2024 16:14

Your 20 week scan was almost certainly correct, it’s rare that they get it wrong and when do it’s nearly always the other way around where a predicted girl ends up being a boy. Most people don’t have another scan beyond that and it’s normal that nothing can be seen this late when baby is bigger and all squished up. If you really want confirmation then NIPT is as accurate as you can get bar invasive testing like amniocentesis but obviously you’re not going to do that just for out the sex. But if it were me I’d just be thinking it’s a boy and that’s that.

whosaidtha · 06/12/2024 16:17

It's only 4 weeks away. Surely you can wait four weeks to tell your other child

Miresquire · 06/12/2024 16:21

The only way to know 100% is to wait until they have been born, which presumably won’t be long now.

Wolfhat · 06/12/2024 16:23

As above, was it flagged that they couldn't be sure at 20weeks?

Ours is a boy, she pointed it out and it was very clear. It can happen that its wrong but more likely to be a boy that was called a girl at 20weeks.

lataraw · 06/12/2024 16:48

NIPT is a proper medical test and I think sneap peak isn't

sel2223 · 06/12/2024 17:10

I personally think you'd be crazy to pay hundreds of pounds for a NIPT now solely to find out the sex when you're due in a matter of weeks anyway.
Most people getting the NIPT are under 16 weeks.

And as pointed out by a pp, most people in the UK don't have any more scans after the anomaly at 20 weeks.

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/12/2024 17:14

Also OP if you booked NIPT then it might be a week for the appointment, then a week for results and sounds like you’re 36 weeks+ now with second baby so the baby might even beat the results! Even if you went to your due date or over it’s £400 to know about 2 weeks earlier. Definitely not worth it IMO.

UpUpUpU · 06/12/2024 17:17

Why are you doubting the scan now? Just wait for the surprise.

Blue2020 · 06/12/2024 19:46

At our 20 week scan a few days ago the sonographer said he couldn’t get a view due to the baby not moving, he said they would only say if they were 95% confident and he was no where near that. He had a guess but didn’t say what it was and I didn’t ask. With our first the baby had the legs open and we found out straight away it was a boy. So chances are it’s a boy unless the sonographer was guessing and openly admitted they were?

Unskilledtopiary · 06/12/2024 19:50

I’d be pretty confident it is a boy.
