This is my first post so bare with me😅

I am a first-time mum and I had my first growth scan yesterday and was told that my baby is on the bigger side, which is absolutely fine as long as he's healthy.
My concern lies with delivery.

I was so terrified of getting this baby out of me, regardless of his size, but now I feel so much worse! The doctor mentioned that during our next growth scan in January, we will discuss safe delivery options, such as a C-section, as he explained that there are more risks associated with a natural delivery for a larger baby, which I completely understand. I'm just scared.

I am 27 weeks and 5 days and he is measuring to be 2.7lbs! Google is telling me that the average weight for his gestational age is 1.9 lbs.

I guess I'm wondering what other people's experiences are with this?

Thanks in advance!

I didn't have a big baby, but did have gestational diabetes that meant I needed to deliver early either via induction or a planned c section. I chose a planned c section and it was a great experience, and recovery was fine. Happy to answer any questions you have about that. Also just to note, the growth scans are actually not very accurate, lots of stories about that, so you may not actually have that big a baby but won't know until they're out of course!

On the other side my mum was allowed to go to 42 weeks and delivered my brother vaginally and he was 10lbs with a big head, but it was all fine!

My baby measured big through pregnancy - biggest was on the 97 centile although he then got a bit smaller proportionally and was on the 88 centile at my last growth scan which was at 38 weeks. There was some discussion of an early induction when he was measuring extra big but I talked to my midwife and one of the consultants and decided i didn't want that. In the end he came on his own at 41 weeks and weighed 8lb 11 so big but not enormous. I delivered vaginally with no need for forceps etc and have recovered well (he's now 9 weeks old).

I spoke to a few different consultants and they had different approaches to it but nobody ever suggested a c section to me. I am quite a tall person (5'10) so they were I think less concerned than if I had been tiny. I also had two gestational diabetes tests which were both negative - again, if you have GD the risk profile changes and they're more likely to induce you early or opt for a section.

Were you a big baby? I was (9lb 3) and apparently that's the biggest factor in the size of your own babies! Certainly in my case he was the right size for my body to deliver and I'm happy I made the choices I did.

I was so worried about giving birth before I had done it, and it’s understandable as you’re pushing a baby out of your vag! But honestly don’t worry, you will SMASH it. No matter the size of your baby, and if there were any complications during the childbirth there are plenty of options to help. Trust me when I say this as well; giving birth is the easy bit🥲
