If you had/have GD was you diagnosed on the first GTT test you had?

Baby's consistently measured big from 16 weeks. I had a GTT at 8 weeks then again at 25 weeks. I'm now 27+3 and had a growth scan today where his belly and legs are still measuring 3 weeks ahead. (Efw- 3lb and 96th percentile) despite already 2 negative GTT they've booked me another test for Friday. I queried and said I just had one 2 weeks ago with a fasting result of 4.1 and 2hr result of 4.5 and consultant said it could've developed in the last 2 weeks since his so big. (Even though he's been big the whole time!) what's the chance my 8 week test results were 4.5 and 25 week results were 4.1 and 2 weeks later I've all of a sudden got GD?

It could be. I know of people this has happened to! GD can develop and progress quickly especially in the third trimester. If you are concerned then you could always get your own glucose monitor and do the finger prick tests yourself, or wait until your GTT. Try not to worry either way and just see what the results are, it’ll be fine whatever the outcome xx

Yeah so for most people they only test at around 28 weeks as that when it really kicks in and the GTT will catch it. I was diagnosed at 28 weeks on my last pregnancy. I'm surprised they did a GTT at 8 weeks though!

I know someone who "passed" the GTT at 29 weeks and then was diagnosed with GD at 32 weeks after sugar in her urine was flagged and she was asked to do monitoring.

I feel so annoyed that I've been made to have 2 earlier ones when the norm is 28 weeks. I'm sick of the test! This is my first and no family history of diabetes at all. My bmi is 35 so they said I needed one at 8 and 25. If this one is negative I really hope I'm not asked to do another again at my 32 week growth scan as I assume he'll still be big since he has been for 11 weeks so far!

I'm petrified of having it! I don't eat meat and cheese etc that I've been seeing people have to eat im so fussy..and the finger pricking ouch😅

If you're sick of doing the test (and who could blame you), you could ask to do monitoring at home for a week instead, but then you've to do finger pricks - you really do get used to it though!

If you are diagnosed in the end, please don't panic. You'll find ways of modifying your own diet to keep your sugars in line. gestationaldiabetes.co.uk is a fantastic resource.

My BMI is 40 and my dad has Type 2, and I still wasn't tested until 28 weeks! Mad how it changes from place to place.

@LolaJ87 oh I didn't know you could request to do the finger pricking at home to test for it! I suppose because it's tomorrow morning I'll just go in and do it but will definitely ask to do it at home if I'm asked again (I bloody hope not!) did you have any symptoms? I've seen on a fb group that people can feel when their sugars are high/low etc. god id dread Christmas if I had it. I'd be miserable watching everyone eat all the amazing food and being restricted!! I don't know how you ladies do it! Well I suppose it's all for these bubbas and that gets us through

@anonny55 I never had a single symptom! Not one dizzy spell, never had sugar in my urine. It never would have been caught without a GTT. I actually tolerated the glucose drink alright, got diagnosed based off my fasting numbers. It affects everyone differently but I ate loads and was still able for the odd takeaway if I ordered carefully etc.

@LolaJ87 that makes me feel better! How was delivery for you? Big baby? Perfectly diet controlled? I've seen most people in the GD group opting for c sections due to fear of big baby

My son was a pretty average size, about 70th centile when he was born I think? I was put on Metformin towards the end as my fasting numbers started to creep up despite being previously diet controlled. The Metformin was fine but didn't make much difference to my fasting numbers. They're dictated by hormones so hardest to get in line.

I was offered induction at 39 weeks but deferred until 39+6 as I wanted to give my body every chance to be ready. I tried all the old wives tales in the meantime and maybe they helped because I had a really smooth induction, just 2 rounds of gel on my cervix and then labour kicked in on its own. Labour isn't exactly fun and my baby was slightly back to back so not much of a break between contractions, but the delivery bit was very positive, he was out in 7 pushes. I would have gone for a c-section if my induction had dragged on past 24 hours, I was rattled at stories I'd heard, but my experience was great and recovery was swift. Hoping it goes as easily this time, I'm nearly 6 weeks with my second 😄

GD is a progressive condition so it’s very possible to pass the GTT earlier in pregnancy and then fail it on a later date.

In my first pregnancy I only barely failed the GTT, was .1 over at two hours, but my tolerance worsened considerably throughout the pregnancy.

Knowledge is power in these situations so it’s worth taking the test again in case it does give you a diagnosis.
