Hello, I wanted to start a thread on here for anyone who might be going through this or has been through it before and can share any helpful tips or insights.
I am currently 11 weeks and had horrific nausea and sickness since 5/6 weeks. I was hospitalised at the weekend and still am and was diagnosed with this. I’m currently on a mix of Cyclizine and Prochlorperazine and seeing how this goes, i have had it via injections/ the IV’s and tablets giving it my all! It’s really battering my mental health and i feel like a shell of a person, i can’t work (also don’t get sick pay so causing us a huge problem) i also have a toddler at home too who i can’t see as not allowed on the ward, so very upsetting. Although mentally the scilence is good as i sometimes can’t even tolerate a conversation with the sickness.

So please share any helpful tips or just share if your also going through this.
xx

i had it with my first two pregnancies. luckily escaped it with my third. first one was absolutely awful as i had never heard of HG and didn’t know how to cope. Second was still very bad but DH was great.

third one i started taking anti sickness the moment i found out i was pregnant and i lived off ginger beer and what ever i felt i needed to eat. i was still sick but i escaped HG and i’m sure it’s due to starting anti sickness meds straight away. doctor will approve if you have previous history of HG

don’t suffer in silence. meds help,
ginger beer, ginger bread men. buy sick bags on amazon and keep them with you. sour sweets were a blessing. i lived off vegetarian sushi
sorry for awful S&G holding sleeping 3rd baby❤️

Ondansetron was the only thing that helped me.

There’s a massive thread all about HG with lots of info, also a Facebook group with is great just do you know

Potato1234 · 05/12/2024 01:30

Second what @Adamsapple89 has said. There’s a very long standing thread on here for HG which you may find helpful! The Facebook group has been a lifeline for me also. You can also have a look or contact pregnancy sickness support, they’re great and they do a peer support service which may help you if your mental health is really suffering. My tips - sleep as much as you can, eat and drink whatever you are fancying no matter how unhealthy, it’s better than nothing. And take it one day at a time. Not sure how I’ve done it but I’ve spent every day for 7 months lying in my bed and only leaving my room for vital appointments. It’s been the worst time of my life but having connections online who know exactly what you’re going through has really helped me xx

Thanks everyone, i did search on here and could only find 1 thread on HG and there was not much on it, so not sure why i couldn’t find that. I have joined the facebook group now too and also spoken to pregnancy sickness support who seem great

Hi!

Biggest sympathies to you, I had it a couple years ago and suffered terrible. You truly feel awful, but just know you will make it through! In my experience first line antiemetics such as cyclizine did absolutely nothing! Ondansetron and metoclopramide worked the best for me so push for that. If the GP tell you you can't have it before 12 weeks- one, they are wrong as I was prescribed it at 10 weeks and two, ask them to refer you or get in touch with a consultant to give them the ok to prescribe it. If you've been to hospital they should.

Hope that helps!

AmberM223 · 05/12/2024 07:53

@lilyflower1803 thank you for that, lots of people have mentioned the Ondansetron so i think i’ll go ahead and try for that if these current ones don’t stick, i’m 11 weeks this week so i would hope they wouldn’t be too concerned about giving it now!
It really is awful isn’t it, i just find the majority of people have no idea what it’s like, they ask me if it’s just ‘bad morning sickness’ and i want to kill them😂

Oh mate, I'm in my 32nd week and my HG is sooooo much better (almost completely disappeared) but I was similar to you around 11/12 weeks. It's the absolute pits.

Ask for ondansetron - they're not super keen to give it before 12 weeks as there's allegedly a link between taking it and cleft lip palates but you can take it after then. Lots of women take it before then as well - the research is tiny and not convincing. It helps a LOT though get lactulose alongside it as it makes you constipated.

Drink or eat what you fancy, I've not had the healthiest pregnancy but baby is growing well, and getting a few meals down me helped me regain my strength and then think about health. For me, it was awful until week 20 and by week 22 it had almost faded - and now I'm just sick maybe once or twice a week. I was signed off work for two months and that helped a LOT, I couldn't do anything. Rest and hydration are key. Looking back, I wish I'd tried not to push through as much as I did.

The Reddit HG forum is v good as is Pregnancy Sickness Support.

I ate a lot of McDonald's when it was at its worst and my step count dwindled greatly
