Another morning sickness question!

My nausea has been horrendous, I have only been sick once but I feel like I am holding a lot of it back as I hate being sick, I definitely have a fear of being sick.

Has anyone else experienced really bad nausea just from standing up and walking?! I think it's a form of motion sickness. It seems to be at its worst every time I move so it's become to the point that I just lay or sit down as much as possible and literally doing nothing. My poor 2 year old has been entertaining himself as much as possible, I have been going to bed early, staying in bed all morning for as long as I can, I just feel really lazy. I haven't been out the house in 2 weeks!

supposed to be a sign of a healthy pregnancy. i was sick like that with my 2 boys, so don’t worry 🙂

LozC0411 · 03/12/2024 10:10

I suffered with bad sickness from 6-12/13 weeks, I would 100% suggest calling midwife or GP for some anti sickness tablets x

That's not true. There's no correlation between morning sickness and a healthy pregnancy.

My mum had 4 healthy kids and not a day of sickness or nausea with any of us.

sel2223 · 03/12/2024 10:53

OP, I had awful sickness from about week 5 to week 16ish and used to get some relief from lying down flat.
Now it's been replaced by awful heartburn and lying flat is impossible

Superscientist · 03/12/2024 13:34

I'm off sick with it at the moment. So much worse when I "exert" myself. The other day getting out of the bath was enough!

Motherof1and2dogs · 03/12/2024 14:40

@Superscientist same here. I am even avoiding baths and showers just because of how much it takes it out of me. I feel so unwell at the moment, I have basically been bed bound for 2 weeks and napping every day! Is this normal? :(

@sel2223 that is such a long time to have to deal with sickness! I keep reading how some women can have it up to 20 weeks, I just don't know how we get through it. I am struggling with the most basic daily tasks.

Same, my Dr gave me a 4 week sick note last week for the sickness.
I'm completely wiped out. Nap most days barely able to move from the sofa. My partner has been doing everything. I'm coping ok with the nausea and sickness but I think that's mostly because I'm not doing anything. I was sick 5 times at the GP surgery just from the short walk there.

I'm hoping it's good news. I struggled with fatigue with my daughter but had the benefit of being able to crash at the weekends to get through the week. I had a miscarriage in the summer with awful sickness but no fatigue. Now I'm finding it hard to rest during the weekend because my daughter is only 4 and doesn't understand that mummy can't keep up with her.

There is correlation between morning sickness (NVP) and a lower risk of miscarriage. Morning sickness is a positive sign.

That doesn't mean some people can't have a healthy pregnancy without morning sickness, or that people can still have a miscarriage with morning sickness.

JAMA internal medicine journal found that women with NVP had a 50-75% lower risk of pregnancy loss

Exactly this - no need for the scaremongering. It's an anxious enough time as it is without irresponsible comments and sweeping statements which people could read and take as gospel causing them to start panicking unnecessarily.

You've mentioned one single study in your reply but actually in others since 2007 they didn't get the same findings. Overall, they have not been able to conclusively prove any link between morning sickness and a healthier pregnancy.

You stated as a fact that there is no correlation between morning sickness and a reduced chance of miscarriage/ a healthy pregnancy.

From my research that's not correct. Several studies suggest a link between morning sickness and a reduced risk of miscarriage (National Institute of Health 2016; JAMA Internal Medicine; Harvard Womens Health Watch) however, some studies did suggest this may be correlation rather than causal. I took this from Tommy's - but they have the big caveat that I made that not having morning sickness doesn't mean you should worry.

As I said though - having morning sickness is not a guarantee you won't have a miscarriage. Not having morning sickness does not mean you won't have a healthy pregnancy.

We don't understand fully why morning sickness occurs. The most recent study I've seen suggests it's a hormone (GDF15) - some people are more sensitive to this hormone.

I had awful morning sickness with both my girls.
How many weeks are you?
I found being sick made me feel better - so I would down a pint of water each morning before getting out of bed, and then get up and walk straight to the bathroom, where the water would then instantly make a reappearance. I could then go about my morning a little easier.
Wore travel bands like they were the must have fashion item of the season, snacked on savoury (mainly salty) things constantly, and adjusted my working hours so I could get home, eat a bland meal at around 4 pm and then go straight to sleep. Mine did last until gone the 20 weeks mark though.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 05/12/2024 13:51

Oh, also - I found that stopping my prenatal vitamins made me feel loads better. Took folic acid, but nothing like pregnacare etc.

Ahh bless you, 20 weeks is a long time to be struggling with sickness :(

P.S. you've got me dreaming of an aperol spritz now 😂

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 05/12/2024 14:26

@Harriet1989 in this house, they are a year round drink 🤣🤣
It was bloody awful, but it wasn't HG so it could have been a lot worse.

Motherof1and2dogs · 05/12/2024 18:26

@aperolspritzbasicbitch I am 8 weeks 2 days today. I have read this is peak time but I suppose it's different for everyone! I just hope it goes soon. Yes I feel after being sick I feel better too but my problem is I work so hard to hold it in due to the fear of being sick :(

I have those bands too! They came yesterday and so have had them on all day and night! I will not take them off. I have felt a bit better today, I am wondering if it's the bands! I am also sucking on boiled sweets and drinking lucozade which also might be helping, but then some days are worse than others and I think today might just be an ok day!

I absolutely hate being sick, but wouldn't go so far as saying it's a fear so it might not work for you, but consider trying what I did - bringing up a load of water isn't half as bad as actual vomit.
