Covid vaccine?

Hi, have any of you had the recent covid vaccine? I've got a stinker of a cold and it got me wondering if I should have the vaccine. I didn't realise you were still eligible for one in pregnancy until I looked it up as no one's encouraged me to have one. I've had the flu and whooping cough vaccine and planning on having the RSV one.
Just wanted to see if it's still recommended to have the covid one and if anyone's had it recently?

My midwife didn't seem fussed either way, but when I went to the flu jab clinic I was offered the covid vaccine at the same time so got it then.

rosydreams · 01/12/2024 12:05

i got all the jabs including the covid and the respiratory one and i still got a awful cold rip .At least its just a cold i think i'd lose the plot if i got anything else =p

Fireplacestockings · 01/12/2024 12:13

Thank you both 😊
Yes that's how I'm feeling @rosydreams thankfully just a cold but I'd be stressing out if it was anything more. I think I may have my answer!

Won't be getting the covid one

What's your reason if you don't mind me asking @teatoast8 ? 🙂

I had a bad cold at around 9 weeks. Decided to ask for the flu vaccine at the pharmacy. The pharmacist was kind of implying I shouldn't get the Covid vaccine, but I think that might've been her personal beliefs. The midwife still recommended it.

I've messaged our local clinic who are going to do the whooping cough and RSV vaccine for me and I've asked them if they still recommend getting it. Waiting for their reply, but I think they will recommend it.

I've had Covid in the past (luckily just felt like a bad cold) and I've had the boosters. But my current cold is still lingering, so I worry that if I do catch something, it might be worse than it was before. It's your personal choice if you want to get it, but as your immune system will be more fragile during pregnancy, it is still recommended you get it.

My midwife and consultant both advised me to get whooping cough, flu, covid and RSV vaccines, I had the first three between 20 and 24 weeks pregnant and had the RSV one a couple of weeks ago at about 30 weeks pregnant and have felt fine after all four of them. My midwife said they are recommended to all pregnant women but I have a weakened immune system so both she and my consultant have stressed that it was even more important to get all these vaccines, especially as it will hopefully pass on some antibodies to my baby. I have a bit of a cold at the moment but I'm reasonably sure this has nothing to do with my vaccines! I had a nearly fatal flu infection a couple of years ago which was terrifying and am determined to do everything I can to avoid repeating that experience, particularly while I'm pregnant.

Fireplacestockings · 01/12/2024 15:01

Thank you @ClaraSolis @Everlore
I'm worried that if I catch covid it would affect me worse than before too. But because this is my first pregnancy, I haven't had a covid vaccine in pregnancy before and I'm worried about if it can affect the baby in a negative way? I know covid can, so makes sense to have the vaccine if its recommended. Just feeling a bit in the dark with it all.

My midwife recommended flu, covid and whooping cough (I think there was another one but I don't remember). I had covid between the first jab and boosters in the pandemic and tbh I'd rather not go through that again, let alone doing it pregnant (I'm 10 weeks and struggling with all my symptoms, I feel horrific). I don't know enough about immunity to know whether it passes antibodies to baby, but that would be a bonus.

I will say that I had the flu job in Oct and it floored me, covid jab yesterday and touch wood everything's okay.

My sister had the Covid vaccine last year during her pregnancy, and everything was absolutely fine with her and the baby. She now has a very healthy 1-year-old girl. 🙂

It's strange how people can react so differently to vaccines. I'm sorry it made you feel poorly! I had the flu jab recently and had absolutely no side effects, not even a sore arm. I already had some sniffles and a cough from a cold though, so maybe it just mixed in with those.

Also never had side effects from the Covid vaccine or boosters, apart from a sore arm. So I'm hoping the same will happen this time when I do get it.

Fireplacestockings · 01/12/2024 15:25

Thank you for your reply 😊
Sorry you're struggling, the first trimester can be really tough @OptimisticRealist2024 what kind of symptoms are you dealing with? Really hope the vaccine doesn't have any negative effects for you, the fact it's been a day and you've not felt anything is a good sign 😊

@Fireplacestockings thanks! I've just had a lot of symptoms all at once tbh and I'm not good at being unwell 😂 All day nausea and morning sickness, dizziness, loads of fatigue, cramps, rhinitis, insomnia, sore boobs...I'm a walking bingo card 🥴 I felt like I had a cold after the flu jab but on top of everything else I think it just knocked me for six. Fingers crossed everything is okay for you. ❤️

*My arm is killing me from yesterday but would still rather have that than covid again!

OptimisticRealist2024 · 01/12/2024 16:55

@ClaraSolis Thanks ❤️ I wonder if I was just run down with everything else tbh, but I've never had flu jab before so not sure what's normal for me. Would still rather have a jab than actual flu or covid...!

Oh you poor thing! I know we're all different, but I think my symptoms gradually started easing from around 10/11 weeks, so hopefully it will all start to ease for you soon too and you can enjoy your pregnancy! 😊

I got covid at 36 weeks and was so unwell with it for over 2 weeks I ended up wishing I had gotten the vaccine. I got the flu and whooping cough vaccines but had had covid within 6 months so wasn't able to get the vaccine. Then when I was eligible it kind of slipped my mind if I'm honest, there weren't many covid cases around etc. Just bloody wish I had thought of it. I was so unwell and absolutely terrified for baby (all was fine, thank god!!). It might have prevented me being so sick and all that unnecessary worry. Just my perspective, hope you come to a decision you're comfortable with OP😊

vibratosprigato · 01/12/2024 17:46

I had the Covid vaccine in my last pregnancy and it was fine, no negative effects for me or the baby. I'm not sure if I'll get it this time just because I've had Covid before and it was fine, and I've just had a cold that I think could have been Covid (lost smell and taste for a few days which I've never experienced before!) I stupidly didn't test though, didn't even think to!

From everything my midwife told me and from the research I have done myself on the NHS website, all four of the vaccines are believed to pass on some level of antibodies to the baby, which was my primary motivator for getting all of them, though I would have had the flu and covid if I weren't pregnant. Whooping cough and RSV, in particular, are primarily given to pregnant women in order to confer some degree of immunity on their babies when they are born as, both of these illnesses, while not usually dangerous in adults, can be very serious for small babies. The whooping cough vaccine can be given from about 16 weeks in pregnancy but my midwife recommended getting it about 20 weeks for maximum benefits to baby. As you are probably aware whooping cough cases have been on the rise, partially, it would seem, due to fewer people being vaccinated. The RSV vaccine is the other one you've probably been advised to have, it's only started being routinely offered to pregnant women this year and is recommended between 28 and 36 weeks pregnant, though the advice seems to be to get it as close to 28 weeks as possible. Reading up on the prevalence of RSV cases amongst babies who end up hospitalised due to respiratory issues and the dramatic reduction in cases amongst babies whose mothers have had the vaccine while pregnant makes for very reassuring reading. Hope this helps.

So glad you and your baby were okay @remaininghopeful23! That must have been such a worry.
Thank you, reassuring to know you and baby were fine 😊@vibratosprigato
I'll be looking into getting one booked as soon as I'm over this cold, hopefully it won't be too long! Really appreciate everyone's responses, it's eased my worry. ♥️

I get the COVID vaccine every year and for the last 2 years I get a sore arm but that's it at the injection site and that's it. I get it done in the arm I don't lie on at night otherwise It's a bit uncomfortable to sleep.
My partner got the COVID vaccine this year through work and had the same sore at the injection site nothing else.
So many women have had the vaccine in pregnancy now if there were concerns they would be known now. I've got a condition which means can be impacted more by COVID which is why I qualify for the vaccine.
My uncle died because of my gran contracting rubella in pregnancy. He was born with a heart defeat as a result. I get all my vaccines
