Exercise in the first trimester

Hello!

looking for some accountability and motivation to keep exercising in trimester 1 and beyond

pregnancy #1- had been injured and my activity was low. Too terrified to exercise. Did nothing except walks.

pregnancy #2 - 39 kg lighter than the start of pregnancy #1. Gym 2x per week (weights) then running 5-6 times a week. Hoping to be able to maintain gym and some running.

any others out there?

I must admit, the gym while pregnant is not as enjoyable

NamechangeTTC · 15/12/2024 13:41

I agree @herewegoagain123456

I’m only 7.5 weeks and nausea is horrid.

I need to do the gym today and I feel awful. Desperate not to totally lose myself this pregnancy.

I’m feeling like I need to tell work as I’m so queasy.

Yea those first 11 weeks for me were quite hard. Many of times I was mid set and had to run to the toilet to be sick.

But I was like you and was determined not to loose myself.

Now I'm 30 weeks going every morning still at 6am and am facing different struggles 🤣

NamechangeTTC · 17/12/2024 06:36

@herewegoagain123456 that’s brilliant!

Don't put yourself under too much pressure, the first trimester is really tough. I struggled to keep up running but have been feeling much better since my energy levels came back up a bit around 12/13 weeks. Still feeling sick on and off annoyingly but luckily not when I'm running. Back running 3-4 times per week since 12/13 weeks and still feeling good so far at 27 weeks 👍 a few weeks taking it easier won't hurt x

Just checking in. Exhaustion has fully hit, still running and trying to do 2 gym workouts each week but already feeling it hard! 12+3

I'm still managing 5 gym sessions a week, walking has slowed down now though. Struggling to hit 10k steps a day. 35 weeks now 🥳

SaturnSparks · 18/01/2025 09:50

First time pregnancy for me! I’m currently 20+2.

I was in the gym around 4/5 times a week pre-pregnancy, but had to reduce massively in first trimester. At one point I could manage a light walk I felt so ill!

fast forward to around 13/14 weeks and i finally started feeling better, so I’m back doing around 3/4 sessions a week (managed 4 this week)! That being said, my activity is massively reduced, so right now my week looks a bit like:

2x spin class
2x weights/strength training (reduced weights)

I felt guilty at first but my gym trainer said “you are already doing the biggest workout of all!!”

That helped me :)

In my third trimester.

Still going to the gym 4 days a week to do CrossFit. I haven't felt the need to go easy on the weights, as long as I'm moving well and feeling good I'll keep going. I do take more rest than normal.

I read a meta analysis recently that there is not a detrimental affect on babies if mothers continued to work out at a vigorous intensity in the third trimester (70-90% effort) https://bmcpregnancychildbirth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12884-019-2441-1

The effects of vigorous intensity exercise in the third trimester of pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis - BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth

@NamechangeTTC I think my tiredness was at its worst those weeks this time round. It definitely started to get better around 14 weeks or so. Don't beat yourself up and only do what feels right. Having a few lighter weeks doesn't mean you won't be able to get back to a bit more down the road if you feel up to it.

I'm 33 weeks now and still running 3 times a week, 5k ish max distance and walking up anything other than gentle hills as I get too breathless otherwise. Trying to keep walking as much as poss but similarly finding it harder.

Similar to my first pregnancy I found the latter half of the second trimester a bit uncomfortable and was having to run/walk more, but feeling better again now. Think it's often related to a growth spurt or positional?

Thank you that’s helpful!
lots on here haven’t needed to reduce but I’m dropping weights slightly

raced 10k this weekend, and running daily (short distances). 2 gym sessions a week. I’m tired though. So fatigued. Almost in trimester 2. 13 weeks on Tuesday

Checking back in. Almost 25 weeks now!

still running 6 days a week but super slow. 2 gym sessions with lower weights. How are others finding exercise?

My little one is four weeks old!
I kept going till the end, just did more and more pregnancy-specific modifications and a lot of walking at the end as I was fed up with being pregnant and wanted to gently encourage the baby to come out!

Exercise made a difference to my recovery. My pelvic floor and abs are in much better shape than in previous pregnancies and I could get back to exercise quite fast, I’m doing a LesMills post partum series and it feels good.

Goldpanther · 13/04/2025 09:54

I kept exercises right up until the week I gave birth at end of March, felt I really slowed down in those final few weeks, but still kept up the same strength movements, intensity just went down a bit.

Totally agree with @CortieTat I had a fantastic birth, and feel like the recovery has been so fast. Started post Partum breathing and core exercises from day 2 and feel like my pelvic floor can be controlled like normal, and I've had to increase the difficulty of core exercises.

SaturnSparks · 13/04/2025 10:58

I’m still doing spin class 2x per week (25-30 min sessions) and strength training 2x per week, however modified a lot more now I am 32 weeks.

Still feeling pretty good but slowing down when my body tells me to and have more breaks!

SErunner · 13/04/2025 22:35

Congrats to those whose babies have arrived! Ours has too, now 4 weeks old. I stopped running at about 35 weeks - a bit earlier than with my first when I ran to 39 weeks. I couldn’t ignore that it was causing my back pain sadly. Continued with yoga class and lots of walking up until delivery though. I’ve started doing some core exercises and yoga at home and am walking lots. Planning to get back to my yoga class and start running in a few weeks time. I’m physically feeling good, same as I did with my first in terms of getting back to normal weight quite quickly and pelvic floor not feeling too bad. My main issue which was also the case last time is a fairly large diastasis recti. But it healed well after 18 months or so with my previous pregnancy, so hoping for the same outcome again.

NamechangeTTC · 16/04/2025 09:12

Congratulations to everyone who’s baby has arrived!

I’ve set a small goal of running in the third trimester. Finding it a bit harder now, especially in the heat, but I’m still moving. Using a tubi grip when by pelvis grumbles.

Definitely taking more breaks at the gym. Usually to sit on the floor 😂

My baby is this over 3 months now. I got back steadily to my normal workout routine. After week 7 I started including high intensity workouts and could lift my pre-pregnancy weights.

The birth was a really straightforward home birth without any interventions or complications so I was able to recover quickly.

NamechangeTTC · 02/11/2025 00:19

Well I managed to exercise until 39+0. Born 39+1. Doing a graded return to high impact now postnatal

Well done, very inspiring. Love to see women keeping active during pregnancy. It's too so readily accepted to be sedentary as soon as we get a BFP.
