delayed cord clamping in c section possible?

Having elective at end of week - dreading it, had such a horrible experience in hospital last time [emergency section and loads of other things]
I've read a bit about the benefits of waiting until the cord stops pulsating before it gets cut - can anyone tell me if this is possible during an elective, and if they will allow me this request?
Also would like to do stem cell collection but no idea who will do it, hospital won't. Probably too late unless i delay op.
Any ideas gratefully received....

Did not know you were pregnant Ruty, all the best with the elective and the new baby

As for the cord, you get sewed up pretty quickly huh, best to ask your hospital I guess.

thanks Paps, haven't seen you around for a bit! Yes was wondering if they wouldn't hang around in the op.

Do a birth plan and talk through it with the surgeon/midwife before hand. I had an elective and they stuck to my wishes as much as possible.

I work 30 hours a week so life is busy, also don´t come on MN much these days even when am online. Have settled into life in NZ, nice being home

didn't realise you'd left Switzerland! We were in Bern in December, thought of you.

I will ask surgeon LilRedWg, if i get the chance, get the feeling it will be a bit of a conveyor belt!

Don't know about delayed clamping - sorry - but there is an NHS cord blood bank - they send someone to collect the blood and it goes to a central bank - but not all hospitals are aware of it. God knows why, I think its fantastic that your baby's blood could help him/her or someone else.

ruty - no idea I am afraid but wanted to wish you all the best with the elective. I have had 2 electives and they are lovely - calm, relaxed and from what friends have told me who have had emergency sections completly different.

Try to relax and enjoy it

thankyou!

Ruty, I will be heaving my third csection this summer. No idea about the cord clamping - sorry. But I have seen signs up all over the hospital about stem cell collection. Not only will they not do it, but they will not allow an outside company into the operating theatre to do it either. This is at UCLH in London.

Ruty I had cord cell collection with my last emergency caesarian (for research only not banking). But they can't delay clamping the cord because I think they give you syntocin immediately after delivery and they have to remove the placenta and mop up before the uterus clamps down. This prevents excessive bleeding.

ruty · 29/04/2008 16:44

yes that makes sense wmmc.

IlanaK that is what i am worried about. Whether they will let a private phlebotomist in to collect cord blood. Still waiting for midwife to call me back.

They will usually refuse a private phlebotomist access but the anesthestiologist of one of the theatre staff can do it. It's to do with liability - you can't have someone not covered by insurance poking the patient - even with permission - much like they won't allow an independent midwife to deliver you in hospital unless there is a special arrangement.

But cord blood collection is a 10 second easy peasy job.

Storing it correctly and getting if off quickly is much more difficult but if you have someone standing by with a courier envelope it's achievable (don't ask your birth partner to do it - they will forget while gazing at your adorable baby)

I just wanted to say Good luck with your elcs, Ruty.
I had one after an emcs and it really was lovely and calm.
I don't think they can delay the cord cutting- I think someone has already explained.
Anyway, enjoy your baby's arrival!

I saw someone in hospital a few months ago who had some stem cells collected. She had bought what was needed from a private company, the NHS collected the bolld when she had her c section and a courier collected the blood to take to the storage company.
