Egypt at 21 weeks pregnant

Hi so I am going to Egypt in the next few weeks and I will be 21 weeks pregnant. I'm staying at an all inclusive hotel and I'm just cautious about the food as I've been very careful with what I'm eating but obviously the food in the hotel will not be labelled.

Just wondering if anyone knows any foods in Egypt I should definitely avoid. I know about only drinking bottled water but is there any foods that are pasteurised here but not in Egypt for example?

my mother always said be careful with meat over there but that was 20 years ago so i dont know now haha.I do know apparently runny tummy common to get so pack some immodium just in case .

I would definitely be taking some electrolyte sachets as you will most definitely end up having a bad tummy no matter what you avoid.

I am not sure Imodium is recommended in pregnancy I would check that. Like everywhere else I would
be careful of salads, they may be washed in tap water. Also ice in drinks. Eat food that is piping hot if possible. My husband was there recently and he got sick, he tends to not be careful what he eats abroad and eats a lot of salads. I think salads are high risk as there is a risk of people not washing hands before preparing also.

Anyone I know who's been to Egypt has had an awful dodgy tummy, really bad diarrhoea that kind of thing. But as PP said above salads and ice are a big no no because are prepared with tap water which isn't always clean or good quality. Drink bottled water only. I'd be wary of meat esp all inclusive if it's buffet style, sitting out and not piping hot. Maybe stick to veggie options. If they have cooking stations have the food cooked fresh for you where possible. And if doing any tours or trips away from hotel do not eat the food, it's usually not refrigerated, just bring sealed packaged snacks and water.

As previously, just be wary of ice, salads/fruits washed in the water, meat.

Otherwise, enjoy your holiday.

I think I'm the only person i know that's ever been to Egypt and came back constipated 🤣 in all seriousness, you have to be careful even when not pregnant. My advice would be:

  1. bottled water only - that includes when brushing your teeth and no ice cubes.
  2. Stay away from salad (you don't know if it has been washed or washed in tap water).
  3. Most hotels you can see them grilling/frying the meat but make sure you watch them cook it so you know it's fresh.
  4. It can bloat you but I stuck to carbs (pizza, chips etc) which is not my usual every day diet but I didn't get sick once.
  5. Take some rehydration sachets because even if you don't have a bad stomach the change in weather can really dehydrate you.
  6. Unrelated to food but I got absolutely eaten alive by mosquitoes in Egypt, especially on my legs. Take repellent because I went on holiday in August at around 23 weeks pregnant and reacted badly to the bites.

I've had an upset tummy every singe time we've been. You might struggle to avoid it to be honest. Bottled water, avoid all meat and fish, salad and fruit other than that which is still wrapped in its own skin. Basically eat carbs for the week...good luck!

I am just back from Egypt and was fine. I ate salad, fruit brushed my teeth with tap water. Ate at the buffet, but I did mostly eat from the grill station.

my partner did get an upset stomach where he did have an accident one day. Quite a few people on the plane did so too. Only difference we could think was he ate from the hot plates where the food was left to cool and not kept warm.

I loved the food. It’s my motivation for holidays. In the Caribbean last year, I got a parasite that lasted for weeks after. We stayed at a very clean 5 star hotel. It was unfortunate
