Paracetamol first trimester

Is it ok to take 1 or 2 paracetamol in your first trimester without asking my GP? Has anyone else taken paracetamol during pregnancy and been ok?

Paracetamol is safe in pregnancy but you can't use ibuprofen.
I took paracetamol 4 times a day for a 4-6 weeks in my second trimester with my daughter due to bruised/broken ribs and bruised sternum after a car accident. No issues. I took paracetamol occasionally at other times in pregnancy for headaches and colds etc

I've been taking paracetamol throughout my pregnancy and I'm now 17 weeks. Its fine. Why did you think it maybe wasn't?

Yes paracetamol is OK

@LozC0411 google, always saying to check with your GP first and saying you should avoid taking them if possible but I'm in desperate need asap!

Paracetamol are fine, google will be your worst enemy it causes more anxiety than needed... Ibuprofen you can't have like others have said. I have been taking paracetamol regularly as I have been suffering with god awful headaches and baby is fine :)

@LozC0411 literally the same reason I need to take the paracetamol, the headaches are horrendous and I've been suffering thinking I can't take them or is a risk. Having the worst first trimester!

Agree with a pp about Google. The best pregnancy advice i ever received was to stay well away!

You can take them! Lots of water as well, I took one every 4-6 hours... The first trimester is rough, so do things that'll help! My midwife said at my first appointment I can take paracetamol no problem if I ever need too :)

There are no risks to taking paracetamol during pregnancy (at any stage) according to Bumps. Avoid google, this is the NHS website to check medicines in pregnancy and it’s very good.

Paracetamol is safe. They give you IV paracetamol in labour.

I've had paracetamol in both pregnancies for the same reason, terrible migraines, and if I remember correctly twice for fever caused by virus.. No issues, always approved by gin at any point during pregnancy. I did not take more than 2 doses per day, 2 days in a raw though, just my fear of not taking too much of any type of medicine. Ended up breastfeeding 2 children 2 years each only using paracetamol for any medical issue for 4 years subsequently. Your body adjusts with time, and nothing stronger is needed IME (if we are talking menstrual pain tooth pain, fever, migraine, headache, the "usual")

Sogrownup3 · 02/06/2025 21:59

I think the odd dose is ok but there is some emerging evidence linking neuro development with long term paracetamol use in pregnancy so I would only take if I really needed. Not putting links in but some interesting new data if you google it.

Paracetamol is pretty much the only thing they've actually run trials to confirm safe in pregnancy - at least for short term use. I got the lurgy from hell whilst on holiday at the start of my second trimester and had to take paracetamol every 4-6 hours round the clock for 3 days, judging that continuing with a high fever was likely to be worse - approved by midwife and also random Turkish pharmacist.
