Seeing stars when just sat down resting

I’m 34 weeks and occasionally in this pregnancy I’ve ‘seen stars’ if I’ve stood up fast or bent down and back up, but just now I’ve been sitting down for about half an hour and when I looked up I saw stars for a few seconds.

should I be worried? I feel otherwise fine and have a midwife appointment tomorrow so can bring it up then. This is my second baby and I didn’t have this with my first

Give them a ring

Have you had your blood pressure and iron levels treated recently?

I'm pregnant for the second time too and have been experiencing dizzy spells, light headedness etc throughout the second trimester. I've also fainted and fallen a couple of times.
Mine is from low BP

@Peonyyyy do you have any other symptoms? Headache? Any swelling of your feet or fingers? Have you had your blood pressure checked recently?

Honeysuckle16 · 24/11/2024 19:26

Seeing stars is one symptom of pre-eclampsia. High blood pressure, protein in your urine and swollen ankles are others. Mention it to your midwife and she should do the other checks.

How are you doing op. I hope you've sought help

Hi everyone, I haven’t done anything since as I had no other symptoms (no swelling or headache or lightheaded ness) but it does seem odd to see stars when I wasn’t even doing anything?

at my last appointment about 3 weeks ago I had a different midwife to my usual one and she said ‘is your blood pressure usually low?’ I said no, never usually gets mentioned I always get told it’s fine. But then she didn’t seem concerned and just moved on. She also got me to do a urine sample and I mentioned my usual midwife hasn’t asked for one this whole pregnancy (even though with my first child I brought one to every appointment). I said I thought it must’ve been something that wasn’t needed anymore.

I have my usual midwife for my appointment tomorrow so I will bring along a sample and mention the stars/low blood pressure being mentioned at my last one and see what she says.

I don’t feel I should call today as I’m not getting any symptoms now, but it’s hard to say, I didn’t have pre eclampsia or anything last time. Thank you all x

Hi OP, it could well be related to low BP like mine is. Unfortunately there's not a lot they can do if it is that, I've just been advised to get plenty rest (almost impossible with another child), sit/stand slowly, have caffeine or sugar if feeling light headed, have sugary snacks etc. Thankfully i haven't fainted again and baby is absolutely fine so I'm just being kept an eye on for now. I'm only 22 weeks though so may be different advice when you're further on.

I had pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy and that's the opposite as that's related to high blood pressure rather than low and I wouldn't have described that as seeing stars and feeling dizzy etc. I had really awful headaches with PE and 'visual disturbances' where there would be black marks and shadows obscuring my vision. The swelling and protein in urine were the telltale signs.

Hope you find your midwife appointment helpful today.

it's NHS policy to check urine at every appointment, I would question this (maybe see if you can speak to the other midwife you saw). https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/your-pregnancy-care/your-antenatal-appointments/
