How much clothing does a newborn need?

I have around 24 vests and about the same amount of sleepsuits, ranging between newborn size and 0-3 months. Plus some other outfits, t-shirts, jumpers and pram suits.

My friend has said I will need more vests and sleepsuits. I surely think I have enough?

Thank you

Sounds like enough to me. They’ll probably get through 2 or 3 outfits a day for a while due to spit up or poop explosions. So as long as you do a wash load at least once a week then it should keep you going! You can always grab some more if needed, but for now I think you’ll be fine.

It really depends how many of what size you have and how big your baby is born. I had plenty of 0-3 vests/sleepsuits but only had a handful of newborn because everyone told me that lots of babies never fit in newborn or only fit them for a few days so we had I think 6/7 newborn vests and 6/7 newborn sleepsuits, my daughter was just under 8lb born and needed newborn, we had to go buy more when she was born because especially in those newborn days we had so many poo explosions/sick that we were having to change her sometimes 3 times a day, she fit in newborn for a good few weeks so we did need more.

Depends on your washing facilities.
Washing machine at home then you have plenty because you can wash whenever.
Launderette trip once a week....you might want more.
But 24 over a week is 3 a day plus a few spares.
You've probably enough.

I just bunged all mine in a vest and Babygros for the first few weeks, clean one in the day, bath and clean one for bed, allowing for changes for spillages, etc

I never bothered changing them into proper clothes to go outside, just a cardigan, hat and gloves and blankets in pram

We did cloth nappies so washed 5 -6 times a week. We had 6-9 sleep suits 8-10 short sleeved vests and 5 long sleeved vests in first size /0-1 month. That was more than enough. The cloth nappies meant we didn't get poo explosions. She was a slow growing wee one so was in this size for 8-10 weeks!

Sounds like plenty. The 0-3 you know they’ll wear eventually so no issues with having plenty of that. Newborn can be more hit or miss depending on birthweight so I’d never get more than 10 of anything in that size but if baby is small so in it for longer and/or is sicky so needs a lot of changes then you can get next day delivery from just about anywhere now, so it’s easy to get more. What you really don’t want is loads of stuff that never gets worn before it’s outgrown.

Depends on how often you want to be washing really, and how quick you can get them dry.

I tend to have a little more simply because I'd rather have extra in case I don't manage to keep on top of washing in those first few weeks

Wait until your baby is born to see what size they are. There are 24 hour supermarkets if you are desperate and many shops open 7 days a week. You need to be aware that like adult clothes sizes from different retailers don't match up.

Like a PP we needed more newborn and then size 1-3 months. However she was in 3-6 months for about 2 weeks then needed bigger clothes.

There as other babies I know who grew much quicker were only in newborn for a week or two. Then were in suddenly 3-6 months. I am also related to children and adults who were never in newborn as they were large babies from the start. (Remember scan weights are just estimates.)

In addition I wouldn't buy any outfits until they are about 6 months. Before 6 months the handful of outfits I had were given to me as presents. They were a hassle to change her into as babies spend most of their time asleep so you want them to be comfortable plus easy to change their nappies or even clothes. My DD often used to fall asleep when I was changing her.

We needed smaller than newborn clothes and had to go to Asda to quickly buy some more vests and gros. Assuming you’re having a baby in the winter months as you say you’ll need warm clothes, so more than a summer baby.

Superscientist · 22/11/2024 14:22

In terms of clothes sizes my daughter was 6lb13 at birth and we found Asda first size was perfect. It was 6-9lb. A lot of the tiny baby only went to 7lb which we wouldn't have got a lot of use out for but the newborn (0-1month) in a lot of places started at 7lb which would have huge on her. Under 6.5lb it's probably worth getting tiny baby but the first size would see you through the first day until you get to a supermarket!

If you run out of new born, you know it doesn't matter if the 0 to 3 months vests and baby grows are a bit big. They will fill them out in no time.
