Itchy all over - should I be worried?

Itchy arms, legs, tummy and back, on and off for the last few days. No visible rash or anything. Worse at night.
Is this normal?

Currently 32 weeks pregnant.
Didn't experience anything like this with DD.
No other symptoms of anything.
Can anyone advise?
Thanks!

Severe itching in pregnancy can be an indicator of a problem with your liver. I'd be getting checked out tonight

Emma543 · 17/11/2024 17:31

Could be nothing or could be cholestasis in pregnancy.. I would give your community midwife a call tomorrow who will be able to check your bloods x

ladymalfoy45 · 17/11/2024 17:33

I had this. MW gave me antihistamines. But in my case it was something to do with my liver. All good now.

readyforroundthree · 17/11/2024 17:33

I'm 34 weeks and at my midwife appointment on Friday I said to her my stomach was itchy. She said that's normal because of stretching but if I started getting itching anywhere else I should phone the maternity triage line.
It could be something like a sensitivity to your washing powder as in my last pregnancy it started making me itch, but it's better just I get their advice.

BoilingHotand50something · 17/11/2024 17:36

Please get checked out as soon as you can to be on the safe side. It can be a sign of a serious complication. Hopefully not but always best to check.

BackinBlack24 · 17/11/2024 17:38

Op get checked ASAP please don't leave it

minipie · 17/11/2024 17:40

Please do get checked.

emmalinewre · 17/11/2024 17:42

Thanks all. Have seen about cholestasis but it seems to focus on hands and feet. I'm not feeling it on either of those. Just arms legs and tummy/back.

I had this and it was because I had high blood pressure so please do get checked out

mrspresents · 17/11/2024 18:00

Please get. Hexed out asap

Starry4321 · 17/11/2024 18:02

I had this it was to do with my bilirubin being too high. Definitely go for blood test to your local maternity

Allswellthatendswelll · 17/11/2024 19:09

I don't want to panic you but cholestatis can cause stillbirth if untreated. That's why your midwife will ask about itching.

I would call triage now to be in on the safe side.

emmalinewre · 17/11/2024 19:20

Thanks All.
I did call the mat unit - they said because the itching is generalised rather than specifically on hands and feet that its probably fine but to go in tomorrow for blood tests to be sure :-)
Seems reasonable.

I had multiple blood tests because of itching all over so badly and they all came out high ALT levels and was concerns over my liver functionality. Ended up they think it was just because I'd had COVID and been unwell. Definitely best to get checked!!

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 17/11/2024 19:25

I had this, particularly on my arms. Had bloods done twice to check for liver issues and luckily all was fine so hopefully will be same for you, but good think you're getting it checked tomorrow.

Mine was just put down to general hormones, in fact I'm getting the same itching now when I'm 8 months postpartum, this time my face is involved and it's so annoying. You have my sympathy. Liberal amounts of e45 cream or similar helps a bit.

Superscientist · 17/11/2024 19:37

Not in pregnancy but I was tested for liver disease a few years ago because of itchy all over. In then end it turned out that had become sensitive to washing products.

I switched to powdered washing powder, solid soap and shampoo and switched from washing daily to 2-3 times a week. I've since dropped to twice a week and realised I have always been an itchy person but it's stopped since moving away from shower gel and liquid shampoos and washing less. I only use soap smelly bits and leave my arms and legs unless they are dirty or I'm shaving them.

If you are itchy the itching will make you more itchy. Press firmly on the itchy bits instead, cold hands were better.

RosieLeaf · 17/11/2024 19:39

Yes, ring the midwives and get a blood test asap. I wasn’t too itchy, but mentioned it as had a routine appointment anyway, they sent me for a test and my levels were extremely high. I was given tablets for obstetric cholestasis, and induced at 37 weeks after being monitored 3 times a week until then.

All was fine, but get it checked!
