Sonographer pressed too hard

Hi, I'm 21 weeks pregnant and had a bladder ultrasound today due to recurrent UTIs. During the scan, the sonographer pressed really hard on my bladder, which made me quite scared. I expressed my discomfort, and he adjusted by pressing two more times gently.

Afterward, I met with the midwife to review the scan, and she asked if I was in any pain. I mentioned that I was feeling a bit sore because of how hard the sonographer had pressed. Her response was, "But he shouldn't!"—which really made me panic.

We checked the baby's heart rate, and thankfully, everything was fine. She advised me to return if I experience any bleeding. I feel scared and frustrated.

What do you all think?

They do press uncomfortably hard a lot of the time.

I think I would at least want it reported to PALS so that sonographer can be taught to correct this in future. I hope everything is fine for you.

Sometimes they do need to press quite firm to get a good image. I wouldn't say I found any of my ultrasounds comfortable, especially since you try not to pee before etc. Sometimes it can also be due to babys positioning or pelvic positioning.

If everything seemed OK with all the checks after I wouldn't worry too much, baby is well protected in there with lots of padding and fluid. Just think of women who have fallen on their stomachs or had other accidents and delivered healthy babies. It's very unlikely that this will have caused any damage.

Thank you everyone 💓

its normal, it’s not that comfortable. they have to press hard to get an image.

you’re going to be in for a treat for an internal examination of how far dilated you are - would recommend epidural seriously

Scans are savage.

Mine jabbed my stomach with the thingy to make DS move around. I had bruises afterwards.

Luckily back then you just had the one scan. I wouldn’t have gone back.

God, steady on! I imagine op just hadn’t realised how hard they have to press sometimes, that’s all.

I had my heart scanned when pregnant with ds. That was quite brutal at times.
She had to get an image from the bottom so had to get right in under my ribs.

They do press hard! They have to get a good view. Not sure why the midwife said that. Very unprofessional

To be honest she was the one who made me panic. I just mentioned it to her and was not concerned, but she made me so scared because I thought she knew what she was talking about. Now I'm sitting and guessing whether she was right or not. I can't believe it.

True. It was first time when I thought someone pressed hard. However, its the midwife who got me really scared unfortunately as she looked very concerned when I said it.

They do press quite hard at times. One particular time freaked me out as it felt sharp not just uncomfortable, anyway, all was fine with my now 1 year old baby. Stress not, OP
