Low dose aspirin from 6 weeks

I’ve been advised to take 100mg aspirin a day, I’m currently 7 weeks pregnant. This is due to having a miscarriage previously at 10 weeks that my consultant is sure was caused by a clot stopping the blood flow to the placenta.
so the aspirin is to prevent this from happening but can increase risk of miscarriage through bleeding.
does anyone else have experience with this & of so what advice were you given by you consultant?

Hi @Nou83 firstly, congratulations!

I've never heard of a risk of miscarriage being increased with low dose aspirin. I've always been advised the opposite and that the potential benefits outweigh the risks by both private doctors and in an NHS setting.

I miscarried my first pregnancy. The bleeding was crazy and as a result I had emergency surgery in the middle of the night to stop it.

My second pregnancy I asked if I could take low dose aspirin as I'd researched it online and I was advised it could be beneficial. I took 75mg with that pregnancy, had no bleeding and a healthy baby.

I'm on my third pregnancy now. I took 75mg straight away. This is an IVF pregnancy. I had bleeding between 5.5-9 weeks, but this later turned out to be due to a SCH. At my dating scan the NHS advised me to increase the dose to 150mg as this is their current guidance. I'm now 15 weeks and all is progressing well.

Thank you @Zeeha im living in France & trying to navigate all this with limited French.
my consultant also said if I was to take the aspirin I wasn’t to do anything strenuous at all… because it thins the blood slightly, he said to stay home & take the odd gentle walk. Is the advice the same from the NHS?

I'm British but living overseas as well. I've been on low dose aspirin since 6 weeks because of age (I'm 41) and pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy.
Never heard of any increase risk of MC and wasn't given any specific advice around it. I'm 21 weeks tomorrow

You're welcome! I haven't been warned to be careful by any medical professional at all due to the aspirin. Yes it does thin your blood, so bleeding anywhere could be more likely, but it's only a low dose, so it shouldn't stop you going about your day as you normally would (albeit you'd like be more sedentary when pregnant anyway). Their advice sounds very cautious. If you were to hurt yourself to the extent where an increased risk of bleeding was a potential problem I think you would be seeking medical attention anyway.

After 2 miscarriages and a ectopic pregnancy, I tried the low does asprin. Everything went well and my boy is now 10. I was advised by doctor to stop taking it nearer due date. Can't remember how many weeks it was. I already had 2 children before the miscarriages. Congratulations on your pregnancy 😚

Sounds way overkill to stay at home and do nothing strenuous. Thousands of women are on aspirin in pregnancy for different reasons. The effect on thinning blood is so minimal. It doesn't increase the risk of mc through bleeding or they wouldn't prescribe it to prevent mc. Carry on as normal (as normal as anyone can be in the first trimester🙈) and very best of luck for a smooth pregnancy❤️

Edited to add - I was on it my whole pregnancy till 36 weeks and had not so much as a bruise, never mind bleeding

Hi. I'm on 150mg of aspirin due to IVF pregnancy / other issues.
The consultant said that there are almost no risks / drawbacks to taking it. From memory (this was months ago), she said the only tiny rare risk is to do with heavy bleeding, but that only usually happens when someone already has a bleeding disorder. Basically no risk to vast majority of women and numerous proven benefits in terms of supporting blood flow to the placenta.

I wasn't told to take it easy or do anything different to any other pregnant woman because of it.

@Nou83 I too live in france with limited speaking ability
Just gone through another mc, and glad I came across this.
Where are you getting your aspirin?
I barely ever go to the pharmacy so not sure if they will do it over the counter?
I think I'll be self dosing this time around... almost certain like you, that the last one was from a sch right where the placenta was.

Nou83 · 15/11/2024 17:37

@sel2223 im 41 too & I think this is why he thinks it’s a good idea. It’s not common practice here at all & so they are incredibly cautious with their advice.
thank you so much everyone for your advice & kind words, so lovely to hear that so many go on to have successful pregnancies after a miscarriage.
I will take it easy for sure but probably not to the extent that was suggested.
@LaTable I was prescribed the aspegic nouririssons 100mg. One dose a day. I collected it from a normal pharmacy.

If any of you are concerned about miscarriage or SCH, you may want to look into Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA). When my SCH remained the same size from week 9 to week 11 I found out about this supplement online where studies are showing promising results for preventing miscarriage and treating SCH. The NHS doctor had no knowledge of it, so I asked if I could try it and she saw no harm given what I'd found online. I bought some and started straight away for two weeks, then had another scan at 13 weeks. The SCH had completely gone! It may have gone on its own accord anyway, but I wouldn't hesitate to do the same again as I'd always wish to do as much as I can to help where possible.

Hello I was also prescribed 150mg of aspirin to take at night and 40ml of heparin injections after recurrent miscarriages which they found was due to blood clotting. I’ve had one successful birth since and one more on the way, all meds started again at 6 weeks. Please don’t worry, it’s all safe for baby and I truly believe has helped me have my son. Good luck!

jolies1 · 15/11/2024 17:58

I had the aspirin - it was fine, I didn’t alter my usual habits at all (wasn’t advised to) only advice was if I had any red bleeding to phone early pregnancy unit / labour ward immediately. The only issue I had was horrendous heartburn later in pregnancy but that could have happened anyway.

Just remember you can’t take ibuprofen with aspirin, only paracetamol.

xMrsxHx87x · 15/11/2024 18:28

I've just been advised to start taking aspirin as I'm a high risk pregnancy due to my age and the fact I've had IVF. I also took it after my ET as it supports implantation. I had stopped taking it but I'm going to start up again after today's appointment.
