Hi, I have my 1st high risk anenatal appointment coming up with the obstetrics consultant. Was just wondering if anyone has attended this before and could give me advice on what to expect/how long the appointment lasts? Thanks ☺️

Following, I have mine next week! Mines a telephone appointment so can't imagine it'll be too long....?

The actual appointments are generally not that long just to go through history and put a plan in place of following appointments and care that may be needed.

However where I have mine I end up being there hours waiting for my appointment just due to the volume of other patients etc.. so worth baring in mind could be a long wait.

It's really just a chat.

Maybe a urine/BP check as well.... and, at my later appointments after 25 weeks these extra appointments were another chance to hear baby on the doppler.

They'll go through what it is that has made you be assessed as high risk, any specific considerations for the pregnancy (should you be taking any extra supplements for example) and the birth itself (Initial thoughts on ELCS, VBAC, normal vaginal birth etc - nothing set in stone at this stage)

There'll be a loose plan made if they think you will need any extra monitoring/ appointments/scans etc throughout your pregnancy.

That's all I can remember

Thanks very much for all your replies it’s much appreciated ☺️ they have booked a physio appointment in for me 2 hours after the antenatal appointment and trying to figure out if I will have enough time between apps lol

It's just a chat about your medical history and why you are high risk. They then told me what future appointments I would have with them and how to get in contact if I needed to. I was in there for a while as I asked a lot of questions. I found it really reassuring.

They also decided that I needed additional growth scans at this appointment and added that to my file (although didn't actually tell me that, found out at my 16 week midwife appointment).

My midwife was quite good at my booking appointment as they told me about extra growth scans etc that I would need - I already have appointments through for my GTT, 2nd high risk clinic appt and first growth scan at 28weeks so I’m guessing the 1st high risk appt won’t be too long 😀

My high risk app was about 15 minutes long in 2 phases with a 30 minute wait in between. They tested my urine, did the c.monoxide thing, blood pressure etc. The consultant told me about the risks I face, what to look out for and made sure I was booked in for the growth scans and blood thinning injections with the proviso that if anything changes or appears then I go back immediately. It was pretty stress free tbh.
