Amby Natures Nest & Accessories - what should I get?

looneytune · 27/04/2008 16:47

Right, decided ages ago I want an Amby Nest for this baby and my parents very kindly offered to buy one. Spoke to mum the other day and she said it would be easier for them to transfer £200 into our account and we buy one ourselves. If money left over, to spend it on accessories etc.

Soooo, been on the net and seen a website with several bits and pieces. I've worked out we can get the following with that amount of money:

Amby Natures Nest
Amby Jump Jump (bouncer thing)
Amby Mosquito Net
Amby Newborn Snuggler
Pack of 2 sheets for the Amby Natures Nest

Is there anything missing from my list? I've seen some with a cover for the spring but couldn't see those? Also, not sure how necessary the Newborn Snuggler is?

Anyone whose used one know if I've covered everything I need/got anything on the list that's not necessary?

TIA

I just had the nest and sheets (would get 2 packs if I were you)

I bought the jumper thing later but dd hates it so its not been used

Mosquito net - would only bother if you live somewhere hot (I'm assuming they're mainly for the Australian market etc)

Not sure what the snuggler is ?? But I was always paranoid a bit worried about overheating so would probably not bother

I bought the bigger spring later as well because dd was a very heavy baby

blueshoes · 27/04/2008 16:59

Unless you live in the tropics, I presume you can ditch the Mosquito Net?

How is the Jump Jump different from other bog standard bouncers?

TillyScoutsmum · 27/04/2008 17:02

I really wouldn't bother with the jump Jump ... IME a bouncer is most useful downstairs (whilst you're doing something in the kitchen etc.) and the frame is really not easily transported up and down stairs...

Door frame bouncers are much more practical

looneytune · 27/04/2008 17:03

Thanks for that

Reason I thought about getting the net is that baby is due in June so will be in it (hopefully) during the summer months and we do tend to get wasps in the room when windows are open. Will have a think though.

The snuggler is supposed to stop them rolling onto side etc. but I'd rather not bother if not neccessary tbh. Here's a link to the website I'm looking at so youo can see what I mean.

As for the bouncy thing....anyone else used one and their lo liked it? Ds loved the door bouncer when he was little but I could never do it without dh being there whereas this one looks easier due to going on the frame. Oh, decisions, decisions!!

x'd posts. Right, looks like I can get more sheets and not bother with the jump jump. I still have door bouncer and will just stick with that

Net - not useful for keeping wasps out then?

my dd LOVED her bouncer, although she only used it for about six weeks or so becuase then she wanted to cruise more.

looneytune · 27/04/2008 17:06

Thanks for that, I think the point about the frame is a good one for me. I'm a childminder so thinking about it, need something that doesn't take up a lot of room downstairs.

Do you think I need to get one of the springs for when they are heavier?

OP posts:
AitchTwoCiao · 27/04/2008 17:09

nope, i know a few people who've had an amby and none of us has needed two springs.
i never liked the look of the door frame bouncers, but then i like closing doors.

TillyScoutsmum · 27/04/2008 17:09

I wouldn't bother at the moment - my dd was 10lber and always on 99th centile and I only used it for the last month or so before she went into her cotbed (at about 11 months)

looneytune · 27/04/2008 17:13

Won't bother with the spring then as ds was only 6lb 9oz at birth so hopefully this will be another lighter baby. I also won't bother with a bouncer and IF decide to use one, use my other type (I don't have a door on the frame as open plan).

What about net??? What are your thoughts on this?

Don't want to buy anything not needed as the extra money can go towards other bits needed.

Thanks ladies

Don;t think I'd bother with the net - but I had dd last summer and it rained constantly so wasps through open windows were not an issue

I would wait and see if its a problem - then order one at a later date ?

looneytune · 27/04/2008 17:18

Ok, cheers for the advice I'm just thinking about my cat now I haven't seen any cat nets or anything and knowing my cat, he'd try and jump in it (he stays away from mindees but he does have a thing for little babies and wants to cuddle up if in the bedroom - I remember from ds being little).

When my sister was pregnant she got a scat mat. It's a mat you can put down in the crib, bassinet, wherever and when the cat jumps on it, it gets a little shock. It doesn't hurt the cat, it just gets them to jump off really quick.

But her cats tend to disappear after the kids are born, and one she hasn't seen in a year (has a really big house). She knows it's alive because the food is always gone.

looneytune · 27/04/2008 19:31

Thanks for that, will look them up as never heard of them.

Forgot to see what everyone thought about the newborn snuggler? Necessary?

TIA

I've used the Amby with my last two babies and did not have the snuggler ( I don't think it existed then). With my first, we used the mattress and he really did roll about a lot when he was tiny. We used rolled up towls down the side to stop that happenning. With my second, we took the mattress out and he slept on it without the mattress. It molded more to his body and the rolling was less of an issue. I am pregnant with third baby now and my husband is keen for us to get the snuggler.

Janus · 27/04/2008 19:50

looneytune, I've got the amby and I have just ordered the sheets and snuggler to go with it. I too have 2 cats and was going to buy the net to stop them getting in but then I just reckoned I could close the bedroom door when baby is asleep so cats can't get in! I think I will get the bouncer but have decided to fork out for that when the time comes. Also, I bought my Amby off ebay, it is practically new and I think I paid about £80, quite a saving. I decided with to wash it all when it came (but it was actually very clean) and, obviously, buy new sheets to use with it. Just an idea but may be worth a look on ebay.
Let's hope it works, this is my third baby and my second, in particular, was a terrible sleeper so I'm hoping this is the answer!

looneytune · 27/04/2008 20:16

Thanks again, reckon I'll go with the snuggler then Suppose we'll try and get the cat to stay out of the room at night then.

Yes, tried ebay but I've not been so lucky with seeing cheaper ones. All the ones I've seen so far have not ended up being much cheaper than a new one. I'll keep my eye out for a bit longer and see what I find. Just that I want it in the next few weeks at the latest as I'm 32 weeks and just want everything organised

Thanks for all the advice

a pillow case works well as a sheet if you have a vom/poo emergency, ladies.

we were given the snuggler and never used it despite dd being a wee tot of 6lb and a half. however we did use it when she'd lie between us in our bed after her first feed, so it wasn't a waste.

angel1976 · 27/04/2008 21:14

I got a snuggler as part of a secondhand package I got but I have to say I found it really fiddly to use! If you put it in before the baby, one side will roll to the other and unless if you three hands, it was difficult to hold it 'open' while you put the baby in! If you try to hold it snuggled against baby before you put the whole lot in, you inevitably ended up with one bit wedged under the baby... Good idea in theory though!

angel1976 · 27/04/2008 21:14

Don't bother with the cover for the spring, I got one and still haven't figured out how to put it on! {hmm]

AitchTwoCiao · 27/04/2008 21:18

angel you twit. put the baby into the snuggler, put both into the hammock...

Jenkeywoo · 27/04/2008 21:21

The jump jump is awful and both of my dd's refused to use it. I did buy the mosquito net as I was worried about my cat but cat never went near it and the net was discarded after a day or two. I did use the snuggler with both my two but it's a matter of preference. If you have any money left over I would recommend getting a spare actual hammock and mattress - about £45 I think. We had quite a few puking incidents where she managed to spare milk volcano style over the entire hammock and ended up washing it and having to put dd in our bed (wish was not awful as it turned out). With our 2nd dd we had a spare hammock and it was really useful to be able to swap over when the other one was in the wash.

angel1976 · 27/04/2008 21:38

AitchTwoCiao, tried that and I still found it difficult. Mind you, I find any sport involving a racket and ball difficult so maybe it is my hand-ball coordination that is being called into question rather than the Amby!

Bumping for myself as lost the thread. Hopefully finally sorting it out today
