Cerebral palsy concerns

Does anyone know if an 11 month old elbowing stomach hard can cause baby to have cerebral palsy? I’ve read online that if a toddler hit baby’s head inside the womb that the baby can have cerebral palsy?? For reference I’m 31 weeks pregnant and my 11 month old fell beside me while I was sitting down on the floor with her elbow sticking out and quite literally elbowed me from the top to the bottom of my stomach on the right side quite quickly as she was falling and I had a little pain later on that night but nothing that would take your breath away and no bruising.
i rang maternity unit but it was to ask about anti-d.

does anyone have a story that something similar happened and there baby was born without cerebral palsy ?? I have to stay off google they have some
scary stuff on there 💔

It's very very unlikely this will cause any harm to your baby. I read your other thread and have been meaning to reply but this evening has been busy with the kids.
I was unfortunately attacked by a patient and kicked/hit in the abdomen repeatedly at 23/24 weeks with my second baby. I was so worried and in shock but I had a scan and all was fine in there, she was sucking her thumb! She was born healthy at 41+2 and is now nearly 2 and has developed totally as expected.

Your baby is very well cushioned. I would seek further advice about the anti-d though as I think you need this. I'm sure baby will be absolutely fine but to be on the safe side.

All the best x

Oh gosh I’m sorry to hear you went though that 💔 but I’m so happy baby is thriving 🩷 I hope that’s the case and I really appreciate you telling me your story pregnancy does something to our brains that make us worry and most of the time it’s unnecessary 😕 I think it’s too late about the anti-d I rang them 3 times asking for it in the space of the 72 hour window and each time they said I don’t need it very disappointed about it actually I lost so much trust for them if I’m being completely honest 💔 I’m happy I’m close enough to delivery because I think if I was only half way I would be an anxious mess for the remaining of the pregnancy !!
thanks again 🩷

Just to add some further reassurance, one of my horses managed to knock my bump really hard when I was carrying DD to the point I was in quite a lot of pain for a few hours afterwards. DD is now a happy and healthy nearly 2yo so clearly suffered no ill effects from the knock.

I knocked my bump quite hard at 30 weeks. It really hurt but no harm done. Bub is now 7.

Walking stupidly fast to get into work I tripped on a curb stone and fell bump-first onto a pavement at 7 months. The thought of it makes me feel physically sick, even nearly 2 decades later. Was checked and given anti-D. Pregnancy went to full term, normal birth, baby hit milestones, is now 19, no impact from that fall - at least none that I am aware of!

I totally understand how much you must be worrying. Hope you receive good care and all stays well for you both

BelleMcC · 14/11/2024 01:04

Thank you all so much for sharing your story’s with me 🩷 honestly sick with worry but I know worrying won’t change anything regardless of the outcome !! Baby seems happy kicking away 🩷 I have an appointment on Wednesday where I will see baby and I will raise my concerns then aswell

My understanding is the only reason you would need Anti D is if your blood group is RhD Negative.

If your blood is RhD Negative, you should have been made clearly aware of it in the early stages of your first pregnancy. Only about 15% of the population are rhesus negative, so relatively rare.

If your blood is RhD positive you genuinely won't need the injection.

Sorry if you know all this! I'm just speculating that 85% of the population are rhesus positive, so have no need to
know about the injections. I certainly had no clue until informed.

Ah, I missed that in your first post, sorry.

I had my 2 year old go into my stomach knees first last week (albeit I’m only 16 weeks) and had the same concerns. I found my mat assessment unit really unhelpful unfortunately and seemingly not able to understand that concern so I’m actually glad in a way to hear someone else mention it. They were only interested in bleeding and bruising. Even said to me that they ‘couldn’t guarantee there was no damage’ and sent me into a spin for a good few days (still not quite settled from that!)

Oh I hope your ok that must of hurt !!!💔 Yeah I was getting looks like I have two heads to anyone I mentioned it to my mom thought I was crazy she said she never heard of that happening and I said I can send you links to some report papers done she just told me to stay off google 😅 I think in your case since baby will still be protected a lot by pelvis that they will be ok 🩷 but sometimes midwives can say stuff that can really send pregnant moms into a frenzy pregnancy does a weird thing to the brain I think 😅😅 sending love and hopefully both of us can stop worrying about this and enjoy the rest of our pregnancy’s it’s easier said than done 😅🩷

Yes I think that midwives sometimes don’t realise the impact of seemingly small throwaway comments on hormonally loaded anxious women at times! Also I think the research we’ve both read is fairly new so not well known at this point. I’m sure, mind you, that if it was impacting a significant number of pregnant women/ babies after they were born that it would be much better heard of… so I presume that’s a good thing in our favour.

I don’t remember freaking out quite so much with my 2nd when my then toddler would jump on me etc but I suspect I hadn’t read that research at that point! Knowledge is a brilliant thing but gosh sometimes ignorance must be bliss 😂
