20 week scan baby measuring small

Had our 20 week scan today and was told that baby is measuring below the 10th centile. They have said I’ll have extra growth scans from 32 weeks. Uterus blood flow all normal.

Had anyone had any experience of this - can the growth rate realistically change or does it mean they will be a small baby? Trying not to be concerned but it’s a bit tricky, especially after previous multiple pregnancy losses (not related).

I had my second child this year and she is measured under the 10th centile at the 20 week scan. I had extra growth scan and was scanned every other week from 28 weeks (this was for a different reason also) because she was small they wanted to induce me at 37 weeks. I decline and had an induction at 41 weeks. Natural birth to a beautiful baby who weighed 7lb 10oz, perfectly healthy.

The short of it is, the scans are not that accurate and almost cause a bit of scaremongering. Babies grow the most in the last few weeks of pregnancy, plenty of time yet.

Good luck with your pregnancy OP. Extra growth scans mean you get to see baby a bit more which is quite reassuring sometimes too 🙂

Hi OP.
I wouldn't pay any attention to this at all.
Scans are notorious for getting weights and measurements wrong.

How big are you and your other half? I've measured small with both of mine, referred to consultant who looks at 5ft me and laughs. One came out at 7lbs 7 which I think is bang on average so actually huge for someone of my height.

Some babies do have to be the small ones, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them.

Lots can change, but it's worth keeping an eye on just in case. Monitoring baby's growth will reduce the chance of baby coming to harm.

@FlingThatCarrot My husband and I are both 5ft5 so we’re never going to have big babies! My other son measured 50th percentile throughout pregnancy and weighed 7lb 10oz.

Thanks everyone else for your really reassuring replies xx
