Early Pregnancy scan

Has anyone else experienced a due date change after an early pregnancy scan? After an early private scan at 7+5, the sonographer has put me back to 6+1.

I am just a bit deflated and confused I as thought I was getting closer to the 3 month mark and now I feel like I'm back at the beginning and I almost feel worried. The due date I had originally was dated from the first day of my last period.

Any advice or similar experiences would be great.

Thank you x

I don't have experience of this personally but have seen others on here comment that early scans can be quite erroneous with dating. Did you definitely ovulate on day 14? Are your cycles usually 28 days? If you ovulated later then the dating might be more accurate than going off your period.

You won't get your official due date until your 12 weeks scan. I had an early scan at 7+1 and measured 6+3. When I had my 12 week scan at 12+2, baby measured 12+2. So the early scan measurements were out. They are so tiny then that it's very hard for them to get accurate measurements.

I was told by my doctor that you can't actually date a pregnancy that early. I had scans every week in the beginning for a high risk issue and my baby seemed to grow 9 days each week as opposed to 7, until it eventually caught up with my predicted dates I'd started out with

This happened to us too :) We had an early reassurance scan and it gave me a due date of 29th Dec, however at my 12-week NHS scan I was told 3rd Jan. Each NHS scan since has been consistent with this. It is quite common for the early scans to not be completely accurate and I don't think anything to worry about :)

My early scan was a week out when it came to dates from my 12 week scan

Agree with others, early scans aren’t a proper due date, baby is too small to accurately measure at that time, even a few millimetres makes weeks of difference at that time. My early scans were roughly what I expected based on my period date but then when I had my NHS dating scan that put me nearly 2 weeks ahead, she’s now a perfectly healthy 7 month old asleep on my chest. The dates from early scans aren’t set, the only date that matters is the one from your NHS scan x

Hi OP, yes me. I had a scan at 8+2 from LMP but I actually only measured 6+1.

LMP is just a guide they use at the very beginning to estimate gestation so they can book your appointments and scans in - it's based on an exact 28 day cycle with ovulation on day 14 so isn't accurate for a lot of women.

Early scans also aren't the most accurate at dating a pregnancy as they're dealing in fractions of millimeters so there's a substantial margin of error at that stage.

Your 12 week scan, also referred to as your 'dating scan' is when you'll get your official due date based on the actual measurements of your baby. This is the most reliable.

Instead of 15 days different like I was at my first early scan, i was 10 days behind LMP at my 12 week dating scan and it's stayed that way since (I'm now 20+4). I was never worried about the dating discrepancy as I have long, irregular cycles and I knew I ovulated late.
