Baby breathing monitors Owlet sock or Snuza?

Hi

This post is not so much about whether you think breathing monitors are good or not but more so which ones have you tried and what did you like/ not like about them.

I am due first baby soon and would like something that would do for at least the first year of baby’s life. I already have a camera monitor which we likely won’t need until baby is in their own room but I’d like a breathing one for peace of mind.

I am looking at the Owlet sock but it’s expensive and also the snuza but reviews say it’s
useless when baby starts to roll which means it would only last a few months? It is medically certified though and I don’t think the Owlet sock is, the owlet seems to be better for older babies too which I like as I’d like something when baby moves into their own room at 6 months.

Thanks in advance!

We had an owlet from a young age with DD2 she had breathing issues from 10 days old. It really helped and I found it accurate. Anytime the monitor showed low readings and she had any other symptoms and we saw a medical professional the readings from the owlet were close to the obs recorded. I've also taken screen shots of her charts on it when she has had bronchiolitis and pneumonia to show her consultant the difference when she is well.

My only dislike is you can't adjust the lower readings which trigger the alarms for oxygen levels.

I still use the camera now as it's a good camera.
Worth every penny

I had a snuza. Used it until my little one was a year old. Cant fault it. Liked that it was easy to pop in bag and use if baby was napping when out and about. It didn't have all the features that an owlet has but I think that was better for me as I would have been too obsessed with the readings as I was really anxious

We have been using the owlet (sock only) for the past 5 months since the day we came home from hospital. I haven't thought about the price once, for peace of mind it is worth every penny. We have had two red alerts for low oxygen levels in that time. Both times she had moved and pressed her face into side of crib so were able to move her away.

I don't obsess over the readings but do like the night sleep summary - useful for trying to recall how many wakings there were in the night and at what times.

I used both from newborn (snuza hero on the go / in pram when out and about, owlet overnight) and found them excellent. The owlet did alarm genuinely on two occasions (baby had dropped their sats due to position of head / neck) and never had any false alarms. I also liked being able to look at the trends of data the next day. I did get a few false alarms with the snuza hero (losing contact with tummy) but would still highly recommend it, especially for car seat naps and out and about.

Interestingly I note that the Snuza is now being endorsed by the Lullaby Trust in their Care of the Next Infant (CONI) programme.

We started with the snuza but it was too fiddly putting it on and taking it off with every nappy change.
Owlet was worth every penny. DS has worn it every night for nearly 18 months. I always thought I was being overly anxious but then it went off one night due to low oxygen levels and he was struggling to breathe due to a viral wheeze. He got admitted to hospital due to low oxygen levels.

Another vote for owlet, used it for 17 months and it has never had a false alarm - it has a different alert for losing contact with foot vs actual low oxygen. I believe the new one just out is medically certified.

We had the snuza with my dc2. I can only compare it to a mat alarm (tommy tippee I think) with dc1 and it was so much easier. The stupid mat would alarm every time I forgot to turn it off when feeding so DH would be woken every hour and then we would both be in a foul mood all day. At least the snuza meant he slept so he could give me a break in the morning.

The owlet is fantastic. We have used it with two children up to the age of 3.

We were given a snuza by the lullaby trust under their CONI scheme as explained above. I didn’t like it but didn’t really persevere with it. The owlet is much more accurate and will alarm if the child is becoming unwell, rather than when they stop breathing. The owlet has shown us when our son had bronchiolitis with low oxygen sats and we were able to get to A&E and he was admitted as needed oxygen. We would not have known otherwise and would’ve just thought it was a cold.

Oh you used it for a year? did you find it went off when they started to roll? That’s what it seems to say in the reviews.

Ooh is it? What’s the new one called?

My DH works away so I spend a lot of time alone with my baby and in the early days the owlet was my saviour. It really did give me the piece of mind to relax when they were sleeping. I used it for just over a year and still use it occasionally now if they are unwell, never had a false alarm. Worth every penny for the peace of mind.

I think it’s called the dream sock - not sure if I’m allowed to link to it, but if you google “owlet medically certified” it should come up with the details.

sleepandcoffee · 11/11/2024 09:05

I used the Snuza after having a baby with breathing issues . It was enough to give me peace of mind and it did sound once during the night so it potentially saved his life too - I had to pick him up and really jostle him about to wake him !
I feel like the owlet is great but I know I would get too obsessed with looking at the information constantly .

MovingDilema · 11/11/2024 09:39

Does the snuza work in a car seat in a car or if they’re in the pram and being pushed? Would the vibrations or bumps mean it wouldn’t work?
