Hi all, just found out we're expecting and have quite a busy next few months with a few adventurous holidays booked. We've been trying for a long time so I was losing hope and booking trips to make myself feel better 🙃. It's quite early so not going to cancel loads of things just yet, but would like to get a sense of what might be realistic.

When did symptoms like morning sickness start for you? And when did you not feel like travelling?

Thanks!

I'm in the thick of it just now at 11 weeks.

Symptoms started at 6 weeks for me and have been the worst from 8 weeks onwards.

I wouldn't have wanted to/been able to travel from 8 weeks.

However everyone is different, you might be absolutely fine.

This is my third DC and so far the hardest pregnancy.

Hello! Congratulations 🤍

My nausea and sickness started at 6/7 weeks and continued until about week 14. It peaked at 11 weeks, couple days before I went on a long haul flight and I had to get cyclizine (anti-sickness meds) so I could keep fluids down but once on them, I could enjoy my holiday, so they were a god send. Bear in mind that you may not be able to do any strenuous activities (I had to cancel rock climbing and a zip wire) for yours and your baby's safety reasons and companies won't insure you. I'd perhaps not commit to anything too foodie either, like fancy restaurants, as you may not feel like eating at certain points. When I had bad nausea and sickness, I didn't enjoy any food except the odd plain pasta or biscuits.

All the best for a healthy and happy pregnancy x

Thanks both and congratulations to you also!

Sounds like trekking in the Atlas Mountains at 9 weeks might be a no go then! Hadn't thought about the insurance issue but even if I feel well, if something happens I bet that wouldn't be covered.

I think I'm also getting a tad anxious about travelling because I had my last MC on holiday at 6 weeks and ended up in hospital. It was only city sightseeing but I was knackered and was worried I'd over done it and that it was my fault. The healthcare was great (better than the UK!) but still not fun being far away from home when that happens.

My nausea and tiredness kicked in at 6 weeks. By 8 weeks I was slightly less tired by the nausea was worse. I had to tell my boss at 8 weeks as I was struggling so much to concentrate as just felt so sick constantly. Lasted until about 12ish weeks.
I think it’ll be nice for you to have trips to look forward to, but maybe don’t commit to booking certain activities or restaurants etc. You might find a morning of walking around will mean you just want to rest and nap in the afternoon. Certain foods or smells might make you feel more sick so no point going to places that serve that food.

First pregnancy, no symptoms until over 7 weeks. The main ones were being sick every night, sensitivity to smells and massive food aversions.
I found the pregnancy got worse as it went on not better, ended up with dental issues in the second trimester then appendicitis at 28 weeks and finally pre-eclampsia at 36 weeks.

Current pregnancy (I'm 20 weeks), symptoms started earlier around 5.5 weeks, sickness much worse and more frequent than the first time, insomnia, awful headaches. Second trimester came the mouth ulcers, dizzy spells and actual fainting. Excited to see what the 3rd trimester will bring.....not!

Both girls by the way.

I'm moving countries around 26 weeks but don't think I will travel anywhere else after that, just in case. Technically most airlines say up to 36 weeks is fine but you may struggle with getting insurance that late on.

I had hyperemiesis from week 5-21, with strongest period of sickness between 5-12 weeks. I definitely couldn't have managed any adventurous holidays sadly, getting out the flat once a week was my record. It's such a personal thing, you just really don't know. On top of the HG, I was insanely tired. Weirdly now I'm in my third trimester, this is when I have the most energy.

Britanix · 10/11/2024 09:40

Everyone's different. Me and my friend are pregnant at the same time she's had some tiredness and feeling sick but was never sick. I'm 25 weeks and still horrific with sickness, headaches , cervix issues amoing lots of other symtoms . In fact my body seems to add a new symptom every week still 😅. This is my second and never again. I've had to cancel a holiday in October and over Christmas as I can't fly or move really.

Britanix · 10/11/2024 09:45

Although I did go on holiday at 4 weeks and then 9 weeks .9 weeks was UK based and managed it pretty well. I was sick but still enjoyed myself now would be awful.

Mumof1andacat · 10/11/2024 09:52

I feel like the minority but I had zero symptoms my whole pregnancy. I just waddled a bit towards the end. I never more tired than usual and worked full time until 37 weeks.

CatmumTTC · 10/11/2024 09:58

Thanks all for sharing. Sounds like the more adventurous holidays are out for insurance reasons. The other trips I will play by ear nearer the time!

Between 8-14 weeks for me.

Blue2020 · 10/11/2024 23:16

Some people don’t have sickness. I have three friends who all escaped it and didn’t have any symptoms in the first trimester.

This is my third pregnancy. First ended in missed miscarriage. I found out at 9 weeks, I went to Venice at 10 weeks and drank. Miscarried at 11.5 weeks. Second pregnancy I was actually on holiday on an active hiking trip when I found out. I was away until 6 weeks and fine. My sickness started at 7 weeks and went to 14 weeks. I was mostly only sick in the mornings until 11/12 weeks so I would have been fine going away.

Third pregnancy I was sick from 4 weeks until 8.5 weeks. Went away in the uk at 8 weeks at the peak and maybe it was because I was active but it was reduced while away. The travel back was bad and the next day it was awful but then it went away fully.

So all three of mine were unpredictable in the weeks it happened and how severe.

paristotokyo · 10/11/2024 23:20

Both times 6-12 weeks were the worst with all day nausea and fatigue.

Monday55 · 10/11/2024 23:21

You don't have to suffer, go to the GP and get nausea meds.

I'm Week 13 and asked for meds when I couldn't cope anymore around week 9, have been doing fine since the meds.

FlingThatCarrot · 10/11/2024 23:26

Never had sickness. Slightly nauseous around 10-14weeks but never actually sick.

Worst symptoms was extreme tiredness, felt like I'd just climbed everest from 7-15weeks. Literally incapable of doing anything, just shattered. Same for all my pregnancies.

Also painful boobs and extreme fullness/bloating so we'd go out for dinner and I couldn't eat more than one or two bites- wasted so much money on food I couldn't enjoy!

Latenightreader · 10/11/2024 23:28

My only real symptom in the first trimester was needing to get up to pee in the night which started pretty much straight away (just over a week after I had my transfer). I remember being really tired and needing naps at odd times but I think that was later - 15 weeks onwardsish.

The only time I felt sick was if I was thirsty - if I didn't get water straight away I started heaving (was never sick, a sip of water cured it), or if I lay on my back. I had to have a detailed scan to rule something out and the lovely trainee consultant ended up holding my hair...

There's no saying really - good luck and congratulations!
