What clothes do I need for a March baby?

I’m due in March and scouring Vinted for baby clothes at the moment. At the moment I have 6 newborn sleepsuits (mix of zippers and poppers) and 5 0-1 month sleepsuits. The baby will also have about 300 knitted hats and cardigans from my MIL!

For vests do I need long or short sleeved? And do I need socks if the baby is mostly going to be in baby grows? I assume a pram suit is too much for a March baby.

We have had snow in March and a BBQ early April it’s such a hard month to guess for!

I would go short sleeve vests, worse case you can add layers. I would get some 0-3 sleep suits next, if you end up with a bigger baby then the new born ones don’t last long.

I don’t think I used socks massively at this age then tend to just fall off / get lost so we stuck with sleep suits more.

I have a February baby who, admittedly, is now 9 yrs old but we had a mix of short/long sleeved vests, and found that socks didn’t and up being used much - they fall off or baby is in sleep suits so much that they don’t need socks. Of course, if during the daytime you will dress baby in other clothing then some socks will be useful.

We were given a lot of clothing and ended up with a huge amount of matching hats and socks that never got used unfortunately. We had a pram suit that was used a few times, but it depends as well on whether you travel by car or walk a lot as to how wrapped up baby needs to be (just in case - always remove coats/pram suit before putting baby in a car seat otherwise the straps won’t be tight enough).

My MIL was also a prolific knitter and we ended up with 10 cardigans for between 0-6 months but tbh most never got used.

Dd2 was born at the start of April last year so we went for layers! Sleeveless vests + sleepsuits for overnight (along with a swaddle bag), daytime - mix of sleeveless and long sleeve vests in the day plus sleepsuits and cardigan. I bought socks that we never really used. For outside, I had a tuppence and crumble star wrap which was perfect instead of a pramsuit, plus a blanket in the pram bassinet.

Do you know centile baby is tracking? Both of mine were little (5lb 12oz and 6lb 3oz) so were in tiny baby size for a while, then newborn, then 0-3. But agree with pp that if you are having a bigger baby, definitely worth getting some 0-3 things in (although you'll find this is the size people give as gifts so maybe just get some basics to start and see what everyone sends you).

I'm also due in March and finding it a bit harder to predict than my first born who is beginning of August.
I think I'm going with the multiple layers thing so can easily go up or down depending on the weather

I have a birthday around this time. We've had every weather from huge snow drifts to having drinks in the garden.

I had a mid March baby, and the answer is layers! Cold outside? Add a few more blankets to the car seat/bassinet. Actual spring like warm weather? Take them away again!

Pram suit isn't worth it. 0-1m will get very little use if baby doesn't grow out of it first. 0-3m would cover until the end of May/June depending on when in March baby appears, but realistically it'll be used for only about a few weeks tops. Save your money and use a couple of cellular blankets instead, and layer to the weather.

As for vests, I loathe long sleeved vests. I would always struggle keeping the sleeves in place putting a sleep suit on top. Short sleeves all the way!

PolaroidPrincess · 09/11/2024 14:10

Agree that pull probably not get much use out of a pram suit plus car seat blankets are a lot easier to use

ChangingChangingMe · 09/11/2024 14:14

I had a December baby and rarely used a pram suit. Unless you’re likely to go on lots of long walks outdoors with baby in pram and not use a sling, I didn’t find it useful. Much more useful were blankets, cardigans, etc.

I mostly used short sleeved vests. Then added sleepsuit and a cardigan. If there’s a cold snap, tights can be useful to go over the vest and under the sleep suit.

I had a 6th March baby last year and agree on layers! Mine was 75th centile/ 8lb 3 at birth and he was in newborn but not for long, couple of weeks at most before being in 0-3. We bought a pram suit and didn’t use it once! Just a good few cellular blankets and thick cardigans. Barely wore socks, just sleepsuits on rotation with short sleeve vests under

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 09/11/2024 15:19

I'd get a pram suit- my baby was out in the snow in March in his

Layers are best as PP said. Number one advice is you can buy the clothes you need when the baby is here too, as long as you’ve got a few basics. I ended up not needing any of the newborn clothes I got as my baby was large, and then learning as I went what worked and what didn’t - basically had a lot of clothes that was never worn. You can always buy a few more items as needed.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 09/11/2024 17:56

My advice would be to get some socks - newborns' extremities get quite cold and socks over a sleepsuit warm them up.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 09/11/2024 17:57

And yes layers - short sleeved vest with sleepsuit over and lovely homemade knitted cardi and hat.

PermanentlyTired03 · 10/11/2024 10:36

I had a mixture of long and short sleeved vests, and DD lived in sleep suits for the first few months. It was just easier, no socks needed. I doubt you’ll need a sleep suit, I had a pram footmuff instead, they last so much longer. Keep an eye on one you like and order it if it happens to be chilly. My daughter was born in March- we barely went out for walks for a few weeks, and in April/May there was a heatwave! You never know though- it’s such an unpredictable time of year!

horchatatresleches · 10/11/2024 13:21

Thanks everyone March is so hard to predict! I'll pick up some short and long sleeved vests (I've heard the H&M wrap ones are easier than pulling over their heads?), a pack of socks just in case feet get cold, and some sleep suits to start us off. Then when I figure out what works best for us I can top up. I'm just back from MIL's where she's made us eight cardigans, two blankets, an advent calendar and a play mat for the baby!
