this is my second pregnancy, dd was born spontaneously at 39 weeks and weighed 3.8kgs.

this time round i have gone private (to J&L because i liked the natural ethos) and have had a growth scan at 34 weeks. the scan showed that baby is big (estimated weight at 39 weeks 3.7kgs) and that the abdomen circumference, while still within normal bounds, was quite large compared to the head. in other words, a fat baby.

although i am mw led i saw consultant last week who said i need to have another scan at 39 weeks to check whether that discrepancy is still present and whether baby is very big- as apparently it's a risk factor for shoulder dystocia.

am quite confused and a bit upset now. i am just worried the scan will show something that will just scare me (ie big baby) and that i will be pressured into something other than a natural birth such as induction or c-section. have discussed this with mw who clearly didn't want to contradict consultant but said she understood my concerns. i really want to go into this birth without fear, and i feel they are being unnecessarily alarmist. also aren't these scans supposed to be really inaccurate anyway when it comes to things like weight and measurements?

anyone had any experience of this?

Isn't it more likely that if they think the baby is going to be a good size that they will just plan accordingly - so making sure you have a midwife who is well experienced in handling shoulder dystocia for example and that you've thought about the position you want to try to use because some are better than others for bigger babies? I've just looked in my red book and 3.8 kilos is still under 9LB and as you've produced that size of baby before I'm sure you can do this Good Luck!
