NHS maternity leave calculations

Hi all 😊
Also posted this in Money Matters but think here may be more appropriate.
I'm a top band 6 in NHS and currently work 29.5 hours . My payroll have been really helpful and have worked out calculations with gross pay but cannot work out net pay.
I was just wondering with tax, NI and pension how much more money did others find came off of this figure. I really want to take 12 months but I just want to be prepared.
Thank you in advance.

If you know your gross pay, can you put it into ‘thesalarycalculator’ website?

ThisCheeryRoseBalonz · 05/11/2024 15:56

@BioBins thanks :). I have tried to calculate on there as they have a maternity pay option but it wont let me put in my hours. I have also opted to spread the pay over 12 months. Will keep trying though as there must be some way of calculating lol.

It's hard to work out - I'm struggling as well. I've asked Payroll to work it out for me and they won't do it until a month before I go off!

According to the The Salary Calculator - I will get around £1,200 per month net, normally £3,300. There is an option to put in hours/days.

@WonderingAboutBabies it's so confusing isn't it 😆. I'm going to have another look at the website to try and work it out but I think I'm just going to opt for the 12 months anyway!

I'm nhs but only band 2 and work 20 hours so very differant to you. I usually take home around 900. I shared mine over 12 months. This was crazy as some months I have £200 which is so much less and some months£1200 which is more than my wages. I'm just going to keep some aside on the higher months for the lower months so I have roughly the same each month. I have worked this out to be around 670 apart from the first 2 months im just going to take a loss to wages. Like i say you earn over 3x what I do so can obviously expect probably 3x maternity

It could be worth asking payroll if they could provide you with a breakdown of expected payments. That’s what I did and it was really helpful. It depends where you work though as I’ve had friends ask this and were refused for some reason. If you’ve got a named payroll officer that’s a good place to start.

Ok, based on a salary of £44962 with a 10.7% pension

Your weekly salary is £44962 x 29.5/37.5 / 52.143 = £678.33
NHS Pay:

  • 8 weeks *‘full pay’ including Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP)
  • 18 weeks 'half pay', plus SMP (except if this will exceed ‘full pay’)
  • 13 weeks SMP
  • 13 weeks unpaid.

So you get £678.33 x 8 = £5426.64
£(339.17 + 184.03) x 13 = £6801.54
£184.03 x 13 = £2392.39
£0 x 13 = £0
Total = £14620.57

According to Listen to Taxman, you'd come out with £1066.39 per month if you get paid evenly over 12 months.

@Plastictrees my payroll has been quite helpful but couldn't give me the exact totals until closer to the time. I think I am just going to take it over the 12 months anyway and I'll try and save a bit to help just in case. Thanks :)

@Lougle wow thanks. That's so helpful :). I think I'll definitely take over the 12 months and will have a bit saved on the side just in case.

my payroll department won’t provide a breakdown until my maternity leave has started!! So hard to get prepared when I don’t know what I can afford to take off.

Im top of band 3 in NHS Scotland (£30,230) and was hoping to take 12 months off whilst opting out of the pension scheme.

Hoping someone on here might be able to advise me😫
